No squirrels!

Last year, and previous years, my garden gets overrun by squirrels, we have several large beech trees, and in just over a week last year I shot 20 or so of them.
This year, nada, not a sign, there is mast raining down on the garden. Next year I shall be a major supplier of small beech trees.
Two local NT estates with sweet chestnuts littering the ground where we normally have to fight off the squirrels, nothing!
I wonder whether the long hot weather this year has affected the breeding. Any thoughts?
Where did Smellydog go on holiday this summer I wonder. 🤔

Last year virtually no acorns or alike. Squirrels effectively starved. On one place where we would expect to see 50 plus we shot 4! There has been very few about. This year enormous mast. Vast amounts of acorns and alike so I expect bumper crop of tree rats next year.

That's interesting, no such problem here.
Not enough pigeons here to eat all the spare mast either.

I didnt see a squirrel all summer, now they seem to be everywhere . My pal has a walnut tree in his garden , it's been like a magmet for them this past month.

I have seen v few squirrels this year. However I have heard they are abundant in a few locations.

Squirrels will migrate in times of hardship as in dry weather my American friends assure me

I can assure you (as an American) that no squirrel ever starved to death unless it was locked in a crate. They are very rat-like in being a true omnivore. They have preferences but in a pinch will eat anything.
