Not so quiet moderator?

Hi all had a couple of mates just come out of the dark ages and put moderators on there rifles. They have all gone for ASE Utra Northstar mods on a .270, 308 and a .25-06.
Whats annoying me is I have a wildcat preditor 8 on a .243 and those 3 rifles are all noticebly quieter than mine.
I have been talking to one or two people who have said to try and change the diffuser from the .30 that came with the mod to a .243.
Has anybody any experience with this or could pass comment. Also if I was to change what is the difference between a standard diffuser and the titanium diffusers.

Looking forward to your coments.

what is the bore size on your mod compared to thiers? (guessing yours will be at least 7.5mm if not 8mm)
Are they all shooting the same sized bore?

bore size is an overlooked essential

some people complain about gas cutting on aluminium mod components, titanium won't degrade anything like as quickly if at all

hi, ive 2 wildcats, one on my .243 and the other on a .308, as far as i know the only differance in the is the size of the bore, the rest is the same.
I was told that if you used the .308 on the .243 it wouldnt be as effective.
so like your self it will be intresting to see what other say.

Where do you measure the bore size on the diffuser? If so the outlet is 9mm and the inlet side is 8mm although that is measuring with a ruler and i'm not going outside becouse its cold and snowing again.

to get my calipers I forgot to mention.

Wildcats simply aren't as good as ASE's - heard a few of both and the ASE'S are always quiter. Get yourself an ASE or MAE T12 if you want quiet

ps My mates 30 cal SL5 on my .243 is as quiet as my .243 cal on my .243... Unless the bore is drastically different I don't think it makes much difference as the bullet going supersonic is louder than a moderated rifle and you can't do anything about that as its not in the gun anymore!

+1
the ASE northstar punches well above it's weight. My mate has a TLD moddy, very similair to the wildcat, and that's noisy too, to the point you still need ear pro. He's getting rid and getting a northstar too

When my mate and I done our lvl1 the rest of the guys couldnt believe how good our northstars compared to there assortment of mods.

Saving the hassele of trying to sell the Pred 8 becouse no dealer I have spoken to are interested in a part ex and getting a variation for new mod, I have just ordered a .243 diffuser and new seal kit for the Pred 8. Will let you know how it goes. Wildcat suggested the option of building it up to a 12 but that starts to look expensive. Will let you know how it goes.

I assume the diffuser you refer to is an internal baffle is it?
stick a drill bit down it to find the smallest hole, drill bits nirmally come in 0.5mm increments

IMO 8mm is too big for a .243 (6.172mm)
7mm at a push, 6.5mm as a best option

moderators can only moderate muzzle blast, the most efficient way to do this is not allow any out
bigger the hole the more gas and noise escapes

you can't stop the supersonic crack as it has nothing to do with the charge.
if you could get an arrow supersonic it would give you a crack

Uk custom shop who make the wildcat mods are on this site and can be contacted via here. As Bewsher says, it's just a matter of physics for the noise reduction ability of mods and the tighter the bore to a given cal the better.

I can put a 8.5mm drill bit down it!
I spoke to UK Custom shop yesterday before I ordered the .243 diffuser. I think the biggest problem is the dealers will order .30 mods so they are not holding to much stock and then sell them on saying the mod is good up to .308 if you change your rifle (thats what they said to me) which is a fair comment but the mod is not going to perform at its best on a smaller caliber.
If I was buying it again knowing this then I would certinatly stipulate the diffuser size to the dealer to match the rifle and if I changed the rifle to a bigger calibre then I would just upgrade the diffuser to suit. At £60 for the diffuser thats not to bad really.

Anyway I await the posty and will let you know how it goes.

yeah you need the right siz diffuser, if you don't own or have no plans to buy an.30 gun you could sell the diffusser

Yea just 8 more posts to go and I can advertise it on here but my guess is there are a lot of mods sold with .30 diffusers.

im sure some one will be intrested in it. or just keep and and buy another rifle :-D
but i think you should take the matter up with your gunshop for suppling the wrong size mod

On the plastic case that came with my predator 8 for storage/packing it says "up to 243"=this mod has been used on 223 first and then on to the 243 and i have found it to be quite enough-When i clean it out from time to time it does sound louder until the carbon/crud builds up and then its fine.
