Old vs New Swarovski El Range

Hi All,

I have been saving up in order to get my self a pair of 10x42 EL Range Swaros. I had my heart set on an orange pair of the new TA model.

I have recently had an offer made to me of an older (10ish years I think) pair by someone who inherited them and wants to sell. They work fine and are in pretty good nick so I am now in a quandary as to whether to accept the older (and therefore cheaper) option or to hold out for the next 6 months to get the newer pair with the tracking assistance.

Anyone with any experience of both and how much of an improvement the newer models are would be well appreciated as well as anyone with an older pair that has experienced any issues I ought to look for…

TIA

not sure but i think the warranty for the electronics in this sort of thing is way shorter than the overall warranty , but swarovski stuff is excellent , if you need/want the extra features then get the new with it's associated warranty if you don't and it's a worthwhile saving then get the used item ?

The Swavi customer service is truly outstanding. My EL Range bins dropped off in January at a local dealer (Where they were not purchased).
Sent to Austria for recalibration , eye piece missing , rubber cover missing, service.
Returned back to the dealer this week , no charge , not even for postage.
Now that is why Swarovski are world leaders in optics in my view.

also my experience , leica were the same as well

I have the older ELs they are 2016 models they are back in the factory as we speak for the third time now for the rangefinder to be fixed. I am seriously considering selling them when I get them back this time I just don't trust them anymore whatsoever.

As someone said above swarovski customer service has been excellent and I will not fault it nor say a bad word about them.

The binoculars themselves the glass is excellent have compared them to the leica rangefinder model belonging to a freind and we both agreed that the swarovski had the edge very slight but had the edge. I think we put it down to the differences in colour in the swarovski being better.

I may be just unlucky with the electronics in mine but for me its the only thing letting them down.

I am having the same quandary except I already own an older pair of EL ranges. I was planning on ordering an orange set of the new 8 x32 EL ranges to save a bit of weight.

I am struggling to push the go button because I don't really think it's worth it as there is nothing wrong with the older binos.

I have also had great experience with Swarovski. I lost one of the rubber eye pieces and they sent me a complete replacement part including the metal housing for free.

I don't have old Swaros but I do have 20+ year old Leica BN and a new set of TAs. At last light the TAs are no better or worse than the old Leicas so have no doubt at all that older Swaros are no worse than new ones. I use the RF part but have never used the TA function to find deer either.
Hope that helps.

Last year I purchased a set of 20 year old 10 x42 ELs that had just been returned from Swarovski after a complete overhaul and I am completely happy with them and I suspect they will be the last set of binoculars I purchase

Enough if an improvement to pay full price?
I’ve got a set of EL from 2014 I think which I had the chance to compare with the newest EL. My eyes couldn’t find the difference between. Newer versions look better though.

I find myself in the same boat - do I buy an old pair or a new pair of the EL Range TA. From what I’ve read, the two main differences are the Tracking Assisnat and the fact that the new ones will range down to about 10m whereas the old ones will range down to about 30m. So really just depends on how close you want to get 😂

How important to you is the TA application? Unless that’s vital perhaps the older pair will suffice?
That’s kinda what I’m trying to ascertain, I’m not sure if it’s a gimmick or actually worthwhile and worth paying for…as a scot I’m basically trying my hardest to save every penny possible!

Yeah it’s hard to see if that’s actually worth paying for, I don’t bow hunt so the lower range isn’t really any factor but the TA seems nice just not sure how much it’s actually useful

I agree the TA seems like a nice tool, however I don’t know if I’d use it that much

I have the TA.
They will also do ballistic data for 3 profiles in the binocular. Data is in the right eye. I think the old style is in the left.
The TA does work. I have used it once. But played with it to try. The ground I have doesn't really need it. I don't shoot far enough either generally.
But off one hill to another face on old clear fell in cover you will get in pretty close. It's another option to have to find deer.
Light wise they will go to until you can't shoot as youre shooting shapes. So plenty good enough. Good on an overcast evening. Definitely a vision aid. In normal light they are amazing. So clear. I bet the NL pure are incredible.
I wouldn't be without mine now. Having great binos and ballistics is perfect for me.

when do you think the TA would be useful?

when do you think the TA would be useful?
The issue with the TA is that you need to be standing next to something that stands out very easily against everything else when you take the shot. Obviously a tree that stands out is ideal. So Shooting from the base of a tree into clear fell, heather or standing crops would make it useful. If you can't work out where you took the shot from when you look back it's next to useless.

A quick tip I learned out here…take small roll of tp with you, if needed you can wrap it around a rock and it’s visible if you need to look back at where you took the shot from, then it’s rots away and doesn’t need to be collected.

It's also useful if your going to **** yourself because your hut mate didn’t do the dishes properly, ask me how I know…
