One awesome hunter.

A Guy Out West

Well-Known Member
I just got back from an elk calling seminar put on by archer Casey Brooks. What an amazing guy, he has the number 2 and 3 Pope and Young, Rocky Mountain Elk. He also has a Super Slam which I believe is all North American big game taken with a bow. He has an Insta Gram page, it’s worth a look. Amazing trophies mostly taken on public land. I will be going after elk this September with a bow for the first time. Can hardly wait.

Will you be using an American flat bow or compound at what poundage
I think 55lb is the minimum, good luck with the hunt.

Minimum in my state is a 45 lb draw weight. Of interest, Casie’s wife uses a 45 lb pull and she has no problem taking elk. As with a gun, shot placement and shooting within range are the key. My bow is set at 52 lbs, at 63, that’s good enough for me, Casie only draws a 65 lb bow and gets pass through on animals as big as moose! I’m shooting a Fred Bear compound Species Evo. I am amazed at how easy it was to be able to shoot it good enough to be able to hunt with it. I hope to shoot within 20 yards, 30 yard will be my max. I can hit a pie plate at 30 yards all day long, or until my shoulder tells me to quite it. My years of gun shooting have transferred over to bow shooting nicely. Form and consistency are key. I’m learning something every-time I shoot it. I’ll be using Kudu point broadheads, they are made in Oregon and seem of stellar quality.

That’s 20 yards and I’m as green as it gets with bow shooting.

Sounds epic, please keep up posted with updates. Are you going on public land too?
I only took up the compound bow in 2021 but have taken two nice animals in Europe. I'm toying with a trip to the US for Black Bear.

Yes, there are millions of acres open to the public here. However, it’s like finding the needle in a haystack, so much ground to cover. I’m tired of rifle hunting for elk in the rain and cold during the October rifle season. Dressing is such a chore in a freezing rain. Per Mr. Brooks, one month from today should have the bulls out actively rounding up their girlfriends. I’ve been practicing my most sexy cow calls at every chance, I’m identifying as a cow elk these past few weeks. Bear would be tricky. You would either have to call one, bait it, spot and stalk, or I guess you could dog it. Any of those methods could be a challenge and rewarding. When using hounds, the challenge is in the chase. With a bow, perhaps in the shot too. Don’t let any no nothing tell you it’s a cake walk. I’ve gone hound hunting for both bear and cougar when it was legal in my state, came back empty handed all three times. It is physically demanding in the extreme, more so than any other hunting I have ever done anywhere. Bait, not really my thing but to each his own. 4 hours north of me in Washington there are some of the largest black bear in the lower 48. Ocean Shores is the biggest town close to that area. The hunting grounds are on an Indian reservation so you would have to hire a guide, it’s bait station Hunting. I had a friend that got one there years ago.

Yes the majority I've seen offering black bear would be over bait. I'm not sure how I feel about that if I'm honest, I'd like to experience the hound thing but maybe spot and stalk would be the option with lots of planning beforehand. Many thanks for the detailed reply.
