Online Application Process Not Accepting Photograph

As per title, the online process is becoming very frustration, not only can you not interim save your information, having to follow up referees for the date of birth and place of birth, and inbetween receiving this, accidentally shutting down my pc, rather than simply folding and closing the screen, meant I had to start all over again…

So now I’ve progressed further than before, upon attempting to upload my photograph, it’s having none of it regardless of how many times I try… I’ve left a voicemail with licensing, but if this persists, I’ll be filling it out the old fashioned way with a printed passport photograph!

Okay… 🤦🏽‍♂️ So after adjusting the box you need to press the ‘crop’ button…🙄🤷🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ Everything so far has been quite straight forward until this point…

Just leave date of birth and place of birth blank, it’s personal data under GDPR and (hint) the referees may not want you to know. If the Police need it they can ask the referees for the information.

Perhaps the file type your trying to submit is the wrong kind, in that case its a easy fix. What does it say when it does not accept your photo? And what file type are you using?

Why do people do this rubbish this way paper version can't go wrong and they can't refuse it

I very much suspect that is the way I will be going.

I have a 'number' of firearms and have no confidence that the on-line stuff will allow me the time (and space) to get them down, before the system crashes.

If they could make it so that you can save the document, and come back to it - that would be a huge step forward.

I had a similar experience applying for my FAC from West Midlands police. In the end I went down the pen and paper route, and despite their web site saying they would only accept online applications from April '24, I got an acknowledgement of receipt after a couple of weeks and it is being processed.
How long it will take is another matter.

You can’t progress onto the ‘on-line’ application without this… I spoke with the farmer and he happily supplied it, I guess the FLD check to ensure the referee’s details, and it’s used only for this purpose, but I felt uncomfortable asking for it.

Beds, Herts & Cambs believe they can and have gone so far as to put this in writing… rejecting and paper applications according to this letter.. Do I want to be a test case? No. Do I believe they’re following the correct Home Office Guidance? No..

The issue with the pics can be the file size itself. Gwent police require a very small file size which the modern phones just don’t do. There are websites for shrinking image file sizes, I don’t mean the dimensions I mean the data size as Gwent they have to be less than 2mb.

It’s a proper ballache the picture has to be of a particular file size so most digital cameras produce files that are too big, when you finally get the file size low enough the box requires you to crop the picture even when it’s already perfectly cropped. Frankly I don’t expect anything better fro Government IT products, they’re all 💩

Cambs limit is 1Mb. The file size and file type wasn’t the issue.. It was just the on-line form which could have been clearer, with an instruction to press the ‘crop’ button after sizing and cropping the image within the blue box.. the image filled the box perfectly, and didn’t need ‘cropping’, and so why would you press ‘crop’🤷🏽‍♂️🙄

@Conor O'Gorman Is Herts, Beds and Cambs on your naughty list for not accepting paper applications/renewals?
Thanks for flagging this. My understanding is that this would be illegal and discriminatory and needs to be challenged. I will flag with firearms team.

Here is what happened with West Mercia trying to go down that route:

The problem with the "pen & paper" approach is you need the following for it to work:

1. A defined and functioning address (office) for the Licencing Department in question.
2. A manned Licencing Department.

When I renewed my FAC, Kent Firearms Licencing were in the process of moving from the Maidstone HQ. Further, neither the old nor new offices were staffed as they were all working from home!

The chances of your hard copy FAC renewal paperwork languishing for months in some long-forgotten Post Room rack was a real possibility.

D&C allowed me to apply on paper because their system wouldn't accept my address. I doubt it delayed it more than a few months! 😂

Staffs have option for paper, yet Derbyshire dont, as per usual nothing simple, straightforward or consistent across the country.
Surely the size of the organisation someone can develop a simple on line form that enables images to be uploaded whatever size by automatically resizing. And enables it to be saved
