Excluding political discussion from the main forum has been by far the best improvement in the forum. If only I could opt out of the sales threads my bank balance may even get out of the red 
It was just a catalyst for unnecessary disagreement between people who would otherwise have so much in common. As Jimmy Carr puts it the narcissism of small differences. IE The tendency for people who agree on almost everything to give disproportionate weight to the few points on which they differ. The false magnitude of small differences, where a narrow area of disagreement can feel larger than the much broader common ground that sits beneath it.
