Over 55 ? Prostate Cancer

You are totally entitled to push for an NHS PSA test, if your GP refuses then ask for a second opinion. Women get mammograms, smears, etc and just as many men suffer and die from prostate cancer. If you have it in a male relative then you have a 50% increased likelihood of having it yourself. Caught early it’s an easy fix, caught late it’s horrible (RIP Ray, still miss you mate!)

Cheers. No history in immediate male family. (Dad old age / dementia, and uncles smoking related)
Happy to pay the price of a box of HMR for the test and to fund other testing.

Whats the initial likelihood?

What’s the side effects of the treatments ?
I've been having the hormone treatment for almost a year now and my PSA level has come down to virtually nil, which means I'm having a break from the treatment for a while.

The side effects are "interesting". The hormone treatment stops you from producing testosterone which "feeds" the cancer, which hopefully stops it in its tracks. The downside, which due to my advanced age isn't a problem, is that you can forget your sex life! You also get hot flushes, which in my case isn't a problem and if severe can be treated. Occasionally you feel tired and knackered but that doesn't last long, and that's about it. I still get up a few times at night to go to the loo, but you get used to that.

Overall, I'm happy I went down that route as it hasn't been difficult and thus far I'm keeping fit

50 I’m couple months and dad’s just been told today he’s got it …. So I guess I’d better get this PSA test done or look into it
One of my stalker friends in a GP so have had the gen on this and been forced to go through the process. Apparently old men die with Prostate Cancer but not usually of it. Young 50 ish men die of it. Pretty much two different conditions as I understand it.

Never hurts to get a check - don’t forget the conkers too!

Good luck to all battling this - my grandfather was diagnosed in his late 40’s and dies at 93 so think positive!

Good luck all!

Ive had a bloods taken this week so just awaiting the results, I thought life began at 50, I felt great and probably the fittest I was in a long time but come 55 it went seriously downhill :) anyway onwards and upwards and lets hope my PSA comes back good
I got my results back and all appears good with the prostate
