Over barrel moderator

Got a DM 80 on my tikka 223, but am seriously considering 3rd eye spartan overbarrel for 243 when it comes.

Got a wildcat pred 8 compact myself, which is nice and small/light, quiet and very easy to strip/clean. Have had the full length version and its not really noticeably different in sound reduction. Better than the DM80 I have heard. Will probably be selling this as don't intend to run any of my rifles moderated anymore.

The Sparton reflex (over-barrel) weighs 450g, the Wildcat P8 weighs 690g according to their site and my T8 weighs just slightly more.

I have done some research on moderators and the Sparton is the lightest reflex (over-barrel) I have found marketed.

There is a Sako for sale which has a CP moderator fitted, I had never heard of them and could not find them on the web so i rang the shop. I was told by the shop owner that it is an aluminum copy of a T8.

With muzzle-cans again, if weight is an issue then the Roedale with two stainless baffles fitted, and two aluminium ones, weighs 225g, an all aluminium Roedale IV weighs 175g, a V weighs 200g. The fully aluminium A-Tec CMM4 weighs 220g.

If you want value for money, and will use a muzzle can, with probably the best noise reduction of any moderator currently mass marketed, then look no further than this site as Jager SA has the A-Tec CMM6 for sale at £190. Outstanding value!

The new Atec Maxim sounds interesting too, looking forward to having a look at one: it's an over barrel version of the CMM with some stainless baffles.

I found that the spartan mod was very loud.
The Northstar mod was more than 50% quieter.

RWC, What measuring device did you use to establish the noise difference between the two?

Northstars are good, as well as being just over 50% (more than 225g) heavier than the Sparton. The Sparton is stippable too, unlike the Northstar. The attenuation of the Northstar is not as good as the Jet-Z, or the S5, and that is using Jackson's published figures.

I have one on order for my varmint .243 a mate has one on his .308 and is very impressed with it, DF

John Carr guns nr doncaster has a few in stock in the usual thread sizes, the one i ordered is mX17 with a spigot and they have not filtered through yet.
I think he said around £250 but give him a ring he is a good bloke to deal with. DF

I have just bought an A-tec Maxim for a .308 Steyr Pro hunter. I had a Wildcat Pred 8 on the rifle previously and did not like lugging the weight on the hill and the nose heavy handling of the gun. My first impression on picking up the maxim was that it is very well engineered, small and light. (370 gm with four baffles). I have zero'd the rifle with it and used it for stalking this morning. Felt recoil and noise seem slightly reduced from the wildcat, but this is only subjective. The rifle shoots very accurately with both mods but the weight and balance of the rifle is much better with the Maxim both on my back and shooting off bipod or sticks. It is too early to say anything about longevity but after zeroing, the inside of the mod was only slightly sooty in the rear section with no sign of the gass cutting I have heard about on the CMM 4. I have removed it, disassembled it and put it back on the rifle with no change in zero. I cannot say the same about my wildcat. Overall, with the maxim, the rifle feels lighter and better balanced, the mod performs well and I am happy with it so far.

I bought a SH 25 cal northstar of a guy here recently. To be honest I bought it by mistake thinking is was an S5. It is the quietest mod I have ever used without doubt. Also without doubt, it is the heaviest brute I have ever hung on the end of a rifle. Must weight at least 750 grammes.

I have a spartan on my .270. Shooting beside my mate who has a .243 with a T8, in an open field, neither of us could notice any difference in "percieved noise" between the two guns.

I'm hoping to get a calibrated sound meter from work to have a play with at some point over the summer just for my own curiosity.

I have an A-tec Maxim on my 6.5x55 replacing a Northstar. I would agree with Venison Stews general observations and am pleased with the change. I am not sure how the sound compares with the Northstar as I sold it to get the Maxim so couldn't do side by side comparison - don't think the Maxim is obviously louder though. One point to note is that, unlike the Northstar, the Maxim has a bush that helps guide the mod on (and adds strength if knocked I guess) like a T8. You need to either bore it out to suit your barrel diameter or run without it - I think both are acceptable although I did the former.
