Paramo

They’ve already got the money you’re just reimbursing the original purchaser some of the money.
Funny how people moan about BASC, BDS, NGO etc etc membership and they don’t do nothing for shooting but think nothing of buying a coat or waterproofing agent that knowingly effectively sponsors the very people who want to stop what we do, love and enjoy.

Dragging up an old-ish thread, I know.

I've just bought a Paramo Pajaro jacket. All my other jackets have been either Harkila, Seeland or Barbour. I've lost some weight though and they make me look like a half empty sack of spuds (instead of a full one) so I needed something. It wasn't cheap (north of £300 nowadays, got it from Go Outdoors) and I've only used it to walk the dog, but here's my initial thoughts:

I'm not going to moan greatly if Paramo donate to anyone. That's their right, it's their dosh although obviously I retain the right to disagree. On my shoot there's a few that have them, which I can only think, with that being replicated around the country it must annoy them terribly. Yet they still make them in dark green (mine says it's "moss") that suits field sports aficionados. Although they sell them as twitchers jackets, which have to blend in with the scenery, since birds can see in colour. With that, I guess they are caught in a rock and a hard place. Although they do make more garishly coloured jackets for the walkers amongst us. Anyway, enough of the politics. Perhaps if I was the Rachel from accounts at Paramo HQ I'd shed a tear or two on the front bench.

It's pretty light to wear and is certainly comfortable and warm. I haven't been out in the rain yet, so can't comment on that directly, but by all accounts so long as you have your pockets/vents closed it's waterproof. Treating it with Nikwax annually or more often if you give it a lot of use is the thing to do. It feels hardier than it looks, but perhaps not the jacket to be crawling through gorse bushes. As for it's breathability, all I can say is that my dog walk was on a 18c day and I didn't get sticky. So perhaps not up to the likes of Gore-Tex garments, but it doesn't seem to be a worry. It's well equipped with pockets, with two bellows pockets for the likes of shotgun cartridges, two cavernous front pockets for maps and suchlike, two handwarmer pockets and inside, two drop pockets that are pretty big too. In fact there's 8 pockets altogether, more than enough to play that game of hunt the car keys! There's zipped vents too for when things get a little warm. They have a fold-away hood that comes out by undoing a few poppers which has a wired peak and a back adjuster that moulds it to your head (or cap if wearing one) so that when you turn your head, you don't just see the inside of the hood.

Apart from how they might fare against gorse and barbed wire (sorry reader, I don't intend to test that), the only thing I wonder about is the main zip. It's a fairly thin plastic affair, so time will tell, although it's in keeping with the lightness of the jacket, so possibly fine.

I'm going to use it on my outings in the field over the winter, see how it goes, but I do wonder if I perhaps need a more robust coat for when things might get a bit rough as a stable mate. Maybe. I'll have to wait for that until the piggy bank gets replenished a bit if I want that. Maybe wait until Mrs Pedro visits her sister for a week or so. All those green coats look the same after all.

That is the thing I have found about Paramo kit, fantastic breathability, way better than any Gortex Waterproof stuff.

I also have a Pajaro, that I am hoping to get back into this autumn, as am shedding a bit of weight as well.

I have a couple of Paramos for winter mountain work (all in bright colours unfortunately so no use for stalking but I'm quite keen the mountain rescue helicopter can find me if required)
but I'm considering another for stalking

they are warm, very waterproof, quiet and ball up small without issue and the waterproofing lasts for decades
they still work even with nicks and tears in the outer fabric as it isn't a membrane system like Goretex
and you can patch it or sew up rips or even use ductape and it remains waterproof and breathable (well the rest of it does)

Important notes with both maintaining Paramo and Gore (but not Gore Active which is a bit different)
  • get decent wash,- ideally the tech wash from Nikwax or Grangers
  • buy your wash in wax in small amounts as it has a definite use by date and degrades quickly
  • store the wax cool and out of the sun (it splits if it gets hot and never emulsifies properly again)
  • wax it only once every 3-4 washes
  • either run an empty cycle before waxing in a machine or wax in a washing bowl and spin in the machine was detergent left in your machine will affect the wax application
  • Goretex can be refreshed in a hot tumble drier or with a cool iron between washes and that reactivates the waterproofing, this does not help with paramo which need rewaxing once they dont bead well

Gore have undergone a significant change in formulation recently due to some nasty forever chemicals in the old formula and the new one is made solely from butterflies and plants or something, which is nice except that it isnt very good and early signs from people using it are it might not last very well
(being fair i think they are still working on getting it right and i expect it will improve just like the original did over the first decade or so)
so I'd avoid getting new Gore Pro for a season or two until they get it right

I don't consider Paramo to be particularly waterproof but rather quick-drying due to the lightness and layering of the fabrics used in certain products such as the Op's jacket.

I've found they are excellent but you've possibly hit on a key point id overlooked

Paramos work as much as you work

They are incredibly waterproof if you walk up a hill
They are less good if you sit at the top and eat your sandwiches sitting against a rock
The water wicks right through them

I use mine in absolute stair rods and trust them and it's what I carry as spares for people who have brought bad kit
But all of that is mostly for marching about where your heat and moving does the magic woo woo that makes them work

I bet they are fairly awful sat still in a high seat, not that I do much of that but anyway.

Great kit and system. Apparently now you need to wash and re proof every 3 months even if it’s not been worn, which puts me off a new one in the future
I find it breathable, however due to how system works it seems to leak where roe sack, sling touches
As for anti hunting- I have been offered discounts in store as has my mate as stalkers for a land owner they support

I also recall they had a game fair stand a few years back !

Things change though

I think off the top of my head I have at least 15 pieces of Paramo waterproof kit. It got extensively deployed and used in Mountain Rescue and subject to some rigorous abuse and stood up just fine. I’ve got a couple of dark green jackets I use for stalking now and again depending on the weather. New it’s very expensive but you can pick up some bargains on EBay and Vinted.
