Mods - apologies if this should be in the politics thread but I do not have that accessed. I also do not intend this to be a political thread & am writing it so other forum members are aware of the debate & can contact their MP to try to help common sense prevail.
This morning I was forwarded an email sent to a member of a club I belong to advising that parliament will be debating the above on 23 February ( signed the petition but have yet to get my email).
Given the stated reason for the consultation is ‘public safety’ & the response to the petition cites the Plymouth incident, I will be writing to my MP to ensure that he understands fully that Keyham could have been prevented if the responsible authority had followed the existing regulations.
I will also be letting him know about my own experiences over my last 3 renewals which has gone from one of efficiency & professionalism to that of hapless inefficiency & apparent lack of understanding of even the most basic subject matter.
The current regulations are fit for purpose, if you exclude the need for one for one for s1, it is their application & enforcement that is the weak link in the chain & will remain so until licensing authorities are brought to account & do their jobs properly through investment in staff & training.
Rather than just bleating about how unfair it is, I’d suggest that anyone else minded to write to their MP ahead of the debate should also point out that if used correctly there is nothing wrong with the current regulations & if they have a personal example of delay, inefficiency, mistakes made, etc. they set it (them if more than one) out clearly as an example.
