It always amuses me when judging terriers how many people tell you it's out of Middleton, Nuttall, etc lines, or Levi Oaks on the Borders

Naming the line after its origin is just a matter of respect though some use it to try sell pups .Black smooth terriers are now Pats to anyone who is anyone in the game ,been in it 40 years and always known them as Pats .Bred same line for 35 years based on Nuttal x Wheeler .Done everything possible with them when it was legal ,now reduced to pheasant protection and ratting .

Cracking little dogs.... many a happy day in their company!

Mate had several but the best were a pair (sisters) called minge and fanny... quality dogs his old girl would leave them out in the garden when we were in school.... they always got out!

His old girl could be heard calling out their names in the street on most days...... absolutely priceless ........

My brother runs a trio of the little devils, 2 of his are as quiet as a mouse but very full on the other is mouth almighty but again very full on when it comes to the job

brilliant working dogs, bit to sporty I thought for a stalking dog, but you never know

Had a Lakeland and a Fell, the Lakeland(pepsi) lived till she was 18yrs old and the Fell(Bandit) unforunately died after consuming chocolate.The Lakeland finally had a stroke and we had the local vet come down, who immediately commented on how both of my dogs terrorized the village for years..
Couldn't take them anywhere, especially if there was anything warm blooded. Once put the Fell into the terrier race at Scone, total and utter carnage.
I swore I would never own such an animal again, but there is just something about Terriers, so got an Irish instead, totally different character, pleasant with people and the odd dog and still quite biddable, but did see the "red devil" once, wasn't pleasant, two Borders ran into the house as I had left the door open, took us a few days to remove all the snot of the walls and carpets.

How true,especially when the fight in the dog is attached a 17kg Irish Terrier

Dog: "Doing all right."

Welshman: (look of shock)

Englishman: Is this your owner?" (Pointing at the Welshman)

Dog: "Yep."

Englishman: How's he treating you?"

Dog: "Real good. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food and takes me to the park once a week to play."

Welshman: (Look of total disbelief!)

Englishman: "Mind if I talk to your horse?"

Welshman: "Horse don't talk.”

Englishman: "Hey horse how's it going?"

Horse: "Cool."

Welshman: (Extreme look of shock!)

Englishman: "Is this your owner?" (Pointing to the Welshman)

Horse: "Yep."

Englishman: "How's he treating you?"

Horse: "Pretty good, thanks for asking, he rides me, brushes me down often and keeps me in a nice stable to protect me from the weather."

Welshman: (Look of total amazement!)

Englishman: "Mind if I talk to your sheep?"

Welshman: "That sheep's a ****ing liar!!”

I have had Red, black and chocolate terriers for 35 years
There are plenty of lads still at it that breed excellent terriers but obviously keep themselves to themselves
Best to gain confidence of a person who breeds the type you like and if they are breeding one to keep - it’s a good sign
The terriers referee to as Patterdales can work in many different ways and have many different temperaments. This can happen in the same litter so just cut down chances by making sure you would be happy with both parents and dogs in sane family
Don’t be took in by all the this is a hard dog rubbish as some that see little work can be hard as they never get chance to settle to a style
My preference was put dog in - bays - when you break in it held what’s in front
Some started hard then settled - some don’t

I used to work 2 patterdales off Brian, he knows his stuff. Is he still breeding? He's getting on a bit now.

Brian unfortunately has had several strokes a couple of years ago which understandably has curtailed a lot of what he did. He has moved from Cheshire back to his home county of Lancashire where he has family. He doesn't have his terriers anymore. I think he is eighty eight years of age.
