I drive until my car needs fuel (most warning lights come on at 50 miles), then I fill it, I don’t top it off at every opportunity. Don’t see the point, we have fuel gauges for a reason.

I just love these little diversions into trivia on here.
If you keep topping up a diesel tank to full, that's the equivalent of carrying an extra passenger around.
Your MPG will fall, so you'll need to fill up much more often (and queue more).

MPG falls off a cliff if you have zero fuel, plus I do a lot of mileage where there are very few filling stations.

Fuel prices could reach record levels even if crisis ends, says RAC

The RAC has warned that average prices may hit 143p per litre for petrol and 145p per litre for diesel in the next few weeks, up from the current level of 135p per litre for petrol and 138p per litre for diesel.
The highest average price for petrol is 142p per litre, which was recorded in April 2012.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said:

The price drivers can expect to pay at the pumps in the coming weeks is being driven by what’s happening with the cost of oil, not by the recent delivery issues that have affected some UK forecourts.
While the oil price has softened slightly, it’s still very near the 80 US dollars a barrel mark and therefore a three-year high.
We’re monitoring the situation closely but with some analysts predicting the price could hit 90 US dollars before the end of the year as demand for oil surges as we come through the pandemic, there is a risk we could see the average price of unleaded fuel hit a new record of around 143p per litre.
Diesel would go to 145p which is just shy of the record high of 147.93 in April 2021.

Average fuel prices have remained stable despite shortages at filling stations. Government figures show that the average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts increased by just a fraction of 1p to 135p on Monday compared with a week earlier.

Typical diesel prices rose from 137p to 138p over the same period. But some filling stations have ramped up prices during the crisis.

So do you drive like 100 miles until it’s 3/4 and then fill it again? A drive from Inverness to London must have about 8 fuel stops!

I can do 110 miles to the forest, and another 30 in there, 110 back home, & I also like to carry a real spare wheel with an inflated tyre on it being old fashioned, sod those chemi kits, useless after forestry roads. I would then normally re fuel on returning home, to a full tank ............ be prepared & all that (considering the current comedy drivers).

A tenner barely wets the tank is my point. 7.5 litres approx. You use 1 litre pulling in and out of the station. My lawn mower tank holds more than a tenner!

just leaving plenty of fuel for you gas guzzlers £10 is plenty in the wifes car, and buy the way i have a push lawn mower keeps me fit and i have a small lawn

Ill happily carry another imaginary passenger around if it saves dealing with todays offerings of bell ends at the filling station.... I mean - ffs, could you not of checked WHICH side the fuel cap was before pulling up to a pump you silly old bint....?
Also as fuel is used excess weight reduces, so I'm not buying your version. I'm sure one of the boff minded SD massive will be along shortly with a mathematical equation to resolve this conundrum

Too right. I'm certainly not going to start wasting my valuable time and money driving to the fuel station when I don't even need any fuel but I'm a nadge under half.. If I need fuel I will stop and fill up every time regardless of if they're queues or not. Half the time I'm on more than half a tank and half the time I'm on less. Therefore I'm better off than the person who is constantly driving to the fuel station to put a splash in the tank to keep it at half and therefore carrying the weight of half an imaginary person around all of the time. Sod that!

Like others on here, I only ever fill up to the top but only when I get down to fumes. That is in normal times.

Crazy times - this afternoon I drove past an Asda in Bradford that was advertising petrol at 129.9. Surely it is shut. I thought. Or backed up queueing for a mile round the car park. But no, there were 3 cars filling up. 3.

There is really no rhyme or reason to this "crisis".

I'm not sure on that one. Albeit it was several years ago, but working alongside HMRC when they were actively looking for vehicles illegally using red diesel, the only exception was agricultural vehicles and they were limited to their use on a public road.
I stand to be corrected if it's changed since then.
