Piper Alpha 6th July 1988

I lost a good pal of mine on the Piper Alpha in 1988. I salute all the people who have lost their lives supplying us with fuel so we can exist in the modern age.

Lets hope the "stop oil " protesters show some degree of decency on this 35th anniversary day.

My old fella, who I followed into the subsea construction industry, was on the Lowland Cavalier that night. They, along with the Tharos and the standby boat Sandhaven, were the first vessels to respond to the initial explosion. I was only ten years old at the time, but I can remember the nightmares that troubled him for years afterwards.

It was the darkest day in this industry and I can only echo your sentiments that the eco-mentalists show a bit of decorum and respect on today of all days.

I worked on the Piper and Claymore and luckily I was on another job with 2W when it happened. I lost crew (who were also good friends). I decided to leave the oil industry after the Piper incident and the last job I did was digging up the pipelines to reroute everything from Piper to Claymore. Thanks Ciscokid. well remembered.

Well said mate lot of lads from northeast paid the ultimate prise sad day 🙁
A work on the concrete slab on the Tyne which built pipers replacement RIP LADS

My brother and sister in law lived in Newburgh North of Aberdeen and knew something was wrong because the helis went out straight over the village which was unusual and then she got a call to go into work as she was a nurse at Aberdeen hospital...

Yup 10 yrs offshore and the very thought of what happened to those people is horrifying.

As an aside though, the just stop oil activists are involved in peaceful demonstrations, something which is (thankfully and very correctly) allowed in this country.

I've lost a number of friends in the oil industry over the years , including one on the Ocean Ranger , and had some close calls myself , it can be a dangerous occupation . Hopefully , respect for the lives lost on the Piper Alpha will be observed . RIP .
