Plant id?

Hi,wifey just noticed this in the garden, never seen it with fruit on before, anyone know what it is?
Only 2 pieces of fruit? on it and it's only a very small low bush. Fruit is about 50 mm dia. and very hard, it's on a very short stalk sticking up rather than hanging down.

Looks like a Japanese Quince, did it have deep/dark pink flowers on in the spring and does it have spikes on the branches?

Wifey says it had bright deep red flowers, poss. 5 petals.
Yes it does have spikes, about 12mm long.
