I owe my Mrs about 6 years worth of birthdays so planning a weekend away in York before lambing starts. Would like to impress her with where we stay (kid free!!) Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay & some nice places to eat?? TIA

Hotel du Vin. Just outside the wall but easily walked into city centre. Ambiente tapas in Fossgate. Lovely food and they do some small sample glasses of sherry which isn't like the Emva cream your nan used to drink!
The wife and I usually eat here when we visit and we have stayed at the Hotel du Vin which was very nice. The Grand hotel in the city looks impressive but never stayed there. Thing is there are many places to eat so enjoy your stay.

Was looking between the grand & the milner. Will search du vin now cheers

Stayed it the Grand a few years back . I would definitely recommend it just wasn’t to sure on the valet parking ?? As my car wasn’t exactly up to scratch on the clean interior department 🙄

The Grand is lovely and would definitely be my choice.

As for food:
Skosh - Welcome to Skosh
Roots - Home- Roots York

Or if you don't fancy fine dining, the Rose and Crown do some fantastic pub food (especially the pies):

Cocktails:
The house of trembling madness -https://www.tremblingmadness.co.uk/stonegate.html
Evil eye - Cocktail bar in York. Bizarre, weird and wonderful.

If you like your wine & whisky, I'd also recommend a testing sessions at Pairings:

I hope you enjoy yourself, and I can only apologise for what's about to happen to your bank account!

My daughter went to Uni in York, so I can get a list of good eateries etc, but for a posh hotel try Grays Court:

My wife and I stayed there a couple of times, and it is both posh & slap-bang in the city centre.

If Grays Court is a bit steep, we have also stayed in this place:

......still only a 10-15 minute stroll from the city centre.

I'll follow up with a separate post on food places once I've got a list off my daughter (and it won't be student dives either 😄)

Eating places (I asked her to give me a cross-section of places and types.....)

Batanga - mexican
Ipfu - japanese
Cut and craft - steak
el paradiso del cibo - italian
Yuzu - asian inspired in a beer hall
Zaap - thai
Spark - street market type food court

Trembling Madness is a good bar, good range of beers & cocktails

Have a great time, York is a great city! The Blue Bell is one of the best proper pubs in the world - well worth a cultural visit! 😉🍻

We’ve taken to staying in Harrogate for a few nights if the good York hotel prices are mental and getting the train in and out of York. Amazing bit of England.
