Always nice to see Siskins and Greenfinches, usually have one or two pairs of Greenfinches around here and just started seeing some Siskins in the run up to pairing off/nesting.



Hard to say what species they are from, how big are they? Any manner of large beetle grub (hoping not stag beetle) could be the culprit, most feed on dead wood rather than cause it to die, so probably capitalising on dieback rather than being the cause.Some ugly ones today...
An ill wind that blows no-one good...tidying up a storm blown Ash tree from Sunday that has been suffering for the last couple of years I found these fellers (sorry) when splitting the bits from around ground level.
What are they? And could they have contributed to the poor structural condition of the tree or do they target dead wood?
