Potential new stalking show

Hi

I believe it has great potential but with a little way to go if to compete with, in terms of polish, the likes of “A Passion for Angling” that probably best describes both intended style and pace?

The key areas I feel could be improved and why:

1. Overt product placement aside I felt a number of shots were held far too long.
2. The lengthy beneath-tree narrative became a little uncomfortable and would benefit from cutting back and forth between moody shots of woodland/wildlife and the principal character.
3. The accompanied stalk failed to capture the excitement or mood that I’m sure was intended. The scene felt awkward in direct proportion to the Client’s less than committed approach to lowered concealment. The camera should have been ‘in the thick of it’ and the puff of blue smoke from the moderator only served to further distance the viewer from the action and reality of a successful stalk.
4. I would have liked to have seen the Client a little more ‘involved’ with the beast he’d just shot even if not completing the entire evisceration. He seemed far more interested in having have his rifle and twiddly of dial scope filmed than being given of a certain deference at his achievement and the life taken.
5. From the point of view of so-called Best Practice, as at least understood by most SD members, there is an argument that you either set out to ensure full compliance and if not ensure a narrative that if possible mitigates such deviation. I am clearly referring to the final evisceration shot that to all intent and purpose looked less than ideal and certainly left plenty of room for speculation!!
6. Invest in a case polishing tumbler for those perfect sun-glinting on brass as it's ejected shots!

Good luck with the next episode.

Cheers

Sounds good, there is some stiff competition but my thoughts are that I miss the Jack Hargreaves approach , personally that's what I want to see, a true passion for the countryside and less about how many can be killed.

I think for the self founded budget you set yourself on this film Charly it's spot on a grate resource for other stalkers,,, (and maybe the odd so called pros out there) You passion for stalking and the countryside shows all the way from start to finish... No need to copy anyone or anything make it your own.

Personally I thought for what I assume was an introductory film it was spot on. Bearing in mind the audience will not all be folks who like to shoot things, I found the distance form the act of shooting and the gralloch to be spot on. It didn't glorify the act and conveyed respect and appreciation of the quarry. Much, much better than the fieldsports stuff.

I wasn’t thinking "exploding varmints" type of stalk conclusion just something that made you feel a little more involved with the moment.

Others may not agree with my observations but at least I’ve taken the time to provide considered feedback beyond simply a “well done”. This mindful constructive criticism is surely what the thread invites as a platform for continual improvement?

Well done, great start.
I appreciate how difficult it is to film a stalk, when the yanks came with me we blew a few stalks because there were 3 of us, me, the client and the cameraman who never left our side so he could film the the actual shooting of the deer, we also wore face masks which helped but they had to be removed pretty quick after the shot (or left on in my case!) but in point of fact we would have blown another chance if it weren't for the 3rd set of eyes being the guy holding the camera.
People don't realise, with digital photography it is limited by available light, so in effect we lost the best times of the day stalking because the light had gone.
Looking forward to seeing the next episode.
Cheers

Totally agree with you that your observations were indeed constructive and considered. The fact that I disagree with a number of your conclusions is not relevant as long as the end product is a good one.

And thank you for that feedback, without this kind of considered response we may not identify the areas in which we can improve our films.

Bambislayer I also watch BBC alba but would not dare to question Nial on his stalking Technique  Both great programs and the more like this the merrier.

Shavesgreen has made a great film and is for the first one not far off the mark. The constructive points written by KB are valid and some I agree. I look forward to your episodes and have subscribed to your channel.

6p do they have many stalking related programmes on BBC Alba?

Excellent video again. Enjoyable for those already involved in stalking and hopefully informative for those who aren't. Fingers crossed it might influence a few opinions.
