Practice makes perfect

I appreciate that my posts might be getting a bit repetitive, so apologies if they are not everyone’s thing. I was out game shooting on Saturday and lamping on Sunday, but still managed to get wrangled into taking the three boys to their rifle club’s air rifle shoot in between. I am unwell, so had planned to stay only until the rain started, but no luck with that. Inevitably they were the last to leave the stands and I was soaked again.

This evening was small-bore night, and it was my youngest’s first time shooting indoors and getting a whiff of burnt powder. Between ear plugs, muffs, ammunition, three rifles, bolts, magazines, and moderators, it felt like I’d packed half the gun room. The club were brilliant as always, letting me shoot back-to-back details and keeping an eye on the others whilst I was on the range.

My youngest took to my middle son’s semi-auto straight away and looked a natural. His first bit of ‘recoil’ (well bark really from .22LR) didn’t bother him, though he did say afterwards that the cycling bolt was distracting while he was trying to stay on target during the follow through. I misplaced the correct moderator for his first detail, but he still shot really well. Not bad for six years old.

Brilliant. I learned to shoot when I was in the scouts in BAOR Germany. My father was in charge of the armoury at the time, and organised for us to use .22 versions of the Enfield in the massive attic of one of the WWII German barrack buildings that the camp consisted of. Superb memories that your mention of burnt powder indoors brought flooding back. If your lads end up with even half the memories I still have at 56 they'll be lucky guys

They would be already if they were daughters.

I remember a long time ago where I schooled a girl (that listened) that had only fired her brothers slug gun (air). I gave her the old krico 22LR and set up a fifty yard target having explained what to do whilst resting on a cushion on the hilux bonnet. Within a very few shots she put every hole in an fifty cent piece size splotch. 50c circa 30mm and improved further and believe me its the same "roo toe trigger as in JAK op"
Kids need to be advised by someone that is basically competent themselves.

Keep them coming mate.

My youngest is a cracking shot too, and a damn site better at clay shooting than I'll ever be. At 12 years old he is itching to get his first deer. He will need to keep at the rabbits and rats in the meantime.

Memories of a lifetime, and some of the best I remember having with my dad
