Pre DSC1

It’s not about the 1/4” out - if you have someone that does a 1/2” grouping with all 4 shots for the shooting test 1/4” below the circle then surely an assessor with any sense can see that a) the person is a capable shot and b) all four shots would result in a dead deer. Failing someone in that instance would be silly.

My point being if the 4 shots were in the area of the yellow marking it’s still a dead deer, some people shoot low heart, some shoot pinning shots, some shoot centre mass (which it seems is the DSC preference) but all three areas will be dead deer.

If a person was shooting and at different sides of the circle I’d be more concerned than someone shooting a 1/2” group that was 1/4” below the line of the circle.
An Assessor has to assess against a standard that is a principle in any field. How would you feel if an MOT assessor just kicked your tyres and said ‘car looks fine to me’? Would there be any point in that? How about if a darts player puts all three darts just outside the wire of the triple 20, should he win the championship? Sorry it’s a pass or fail test and, to be honest, a pretty easy one.

Three darts outside is a scoring system…3 bullets grouped a 1/4” below the line is a dead deer…if it’s about being in the circle why not make it visible from the firing point? Are you saying that an assessor cannot establish if a shot would be a fatal one?

Sorry, that just isn’t how assessment works in educational or training fields. There simply has to be a standard or there can’t be a qualification. Sure, if it’s just two guys having a bit of fun then they can discuss the could’ve would’ve should’ve but in an assessed situation it has to be pass or fail. I am really surprised that you can’t see this. How about the other bits of dsc1? Should the Assessor just look at your answers and decide if you pass or fail without marking them and adding up the number of correct ones?

Plent of assessment is done based on the judgement of the assessor - there is no reason this should be any different.

Driving tests are an example of this - specifically hesitation at junctions etc is very much at the discretion of the assessor/examiner.

I am surprised you can’t see this.

Maybe you are right. Why not contact the DSC people and see it your idea gets any traction?

Not sure when the circle thing was introduced…or who decided that was the way to go…
There has been a marked pass or fail kill zone on the deer target from the very start of deer stalking qualifications in the uk. I think that was around the mid 1980s.

Yes, however, Not in the form of the circle that cannot be seen from the firing point.
