Primers backing out?

Hi,
After finally using the last of my un reach powder I’ve needed to develop a load using REACH compliant stuff.
Cartridge is one with a rim and I’m getting primers backing out considerably.
I put this down to weak loads so increase the loads. Still getting primers backing out but not as far (.006) and showing signs of starting to flatten.
One such load was so compressed it was very hard (Didn’t manage it) to seat the bullet to its cannelure. Same result, slightly flat primer and backed out 6 thou.
As it’s a rimmed case it will be head spacing off the rim but, when I had some (No chance for more) factory ammo the primers didn’t back out.
Any ideas?
Might faster powder help?
Cheers, KB.

Ken old fruit, sounds like the case is doing as it should and gripping the chamber at peak but not letting go to re seat the primer. The bolt may have some headspace as well which could simply be via the case rim thickness being under par.

That can be evaluated with black tape patches stuck to a sized case and closing the action on it. Keep adding until it's difficult to close the action then measure the thickness of the added tape.

N130 N133 N135 N140 N540 are all contenders, but obviously bullet weights come into play.

Is it possibly a headspace issue?
Don’t think it’s head space as factory ammo (None left) worked fine.
Some of the cases I’m using now are from factory ammo.
I have N135 and CFE223.

From your point of view as an experienced reloader were you seating the primers by hand as in hand primer or by mechanical means as in your press or other mechanical means ?

If you were using a hand primer did the primers feel tight to seat and were seated to correct depth ?
I prime by hand which allows me to feel the difference in resistance when seating, any of my brass with little resistance when priming are discarded.

Are the primer pockets slack in your brass allowing movement of the primers ?

What primers are you using some have a softer cup ?

From reading your post it sounds like you may have two problems, one of headspace and one of primer pocket being oversize.
Measure the diameter of your primer pocket and the diameter of your primers to see if they correspond correctly.

If you have any around measure the thickness of the rim of your factory brass and compare it to the thickness of the brass you reloaded, this could help with the headspace issue.

As I said originally (I think 🤔) 37 grains of N135 is very compressed and the primer backs out just 6 thou. Some lesser loads and the primers come out twice that.
Ken.

Hi F H;
Mechanical seater.
Some cases only once fired.
Seating feels fine and not dissimilar to 308 which I’m currently loading for.
I don’t think the primers/seating are an issue here.
As said, factory ammo no problem.
Thanks, Ken.

Hi Sd;
Will try the tape.
I do think it’s a powder issue.
I’m up to 42 grains of CFE and the primers out a bit but not flat so I think I’ll add a bit more powder and try a couple.
I wear out barrels messing about.
Ken.
