Pulsar Quantum Lite XQ30v

I only got a XQ23 John but it sees rabbits/Muntjac/dogs/cats people 100,s of metres away .It claims 800 m but at that range it more coloured blobs than definate I,D ,though where i shoot 100 m is a wide field so its fine for my needs and going long distance its fine at 300 m on bunny,s so sheep/deer sized objects are easily seen atb

Same as tozzybum i have the XQ23 and agree with him i also find it suits my needs perfectly.
I have a friend who as the XQ30 little more definition and zoom less field of view and a bit more clarity, both see out and both find heat sources well over 800m heat blobs.
But like all times when hunting you have to identify your quarry, so they are good additions to the location of heat sources, but don't expect to always be able identify your quarry without further investigation.
Definite game changer and good value for you Dosh.

Thanks men, I was sort of hoping I would read that sort of review. I don`t have to worry about being too positive ID wise with dogs as mine are usually locked up at night and anything else that looks like a dog is fair game on the farm.

I am really onto getting one....I think ha ha.

I can see following a warm blood trail through thick cover might be a bit easier too.

Brock looks nice and warm!

Thanks to the people who have commented on this thread - I was debating the investment at the xq30v level or hold out and get a more advanced model but seems to be more than adequate for carcass location and to make general viewing for heat sources at most reasonable distances for hunting.

I have a fair bit of thermal experience, i have 3 and have used them for perhaps 15 years as a work tool, before stalking style ones appeared. They need technique to get the best of them. Basically you wont see a deer shape in the distance, if you do you would have seen it easily with the binoculars. Firstly lose as much sky as possible from the image, they work on temperature differential and the sky is so cold a slightly warmer animal will not show nearly as well when you have a lot of sky in the image.
When using mine i just look for any heat signal, and then check out what it is. In some areas they simply wont work for hot rocks and branches, and in these situations i simply use the binoculars. In the past i have been looking at a couple of pixels of heat, only to spend ages with the binos before seeing a roe ear sticking out of the heather. i now never ignore any heat, and it can often be a grouse head or rabbit. My pal Bruce built me a stunning roof mounted remote one, it will see a roe at 1000 meters and more easily, we view it on a screen on the argo. It is not so much of a stalking tool as a spotting tool, and we can survey a whole valley with it, count animals and plan routes through the valley so as to not spook animals, whilst heading towards a chosen target. The smaller hand held units will see roe sized targets at 800 ish meters, perhaps a little more on a cold day, reds can be seen at about 1000 meters if in a herd, single animals are less easy to see.
The published figures for thermals always underestimate the range we can see animals in scotlands cold temperatures, but they are for a man sized target, so a large red deer is way easier to see. With roe often you can only see a head in long grass and the like, so ranges are reduced, but these are the deer the thermal sees way before an expert with binoculars. What is certainly true is that owning a thermal will not make a beginner an expert, and they will probably not see any more deer unless they set it up properly and know where to look. Once the thermal shows where the heat source is you still need to identify what it is, and we spend at least as long doing this as we ever did scanning the hill with binoculars.

Some good information there, just been out with the airgun and nv. Took the xq30v aswell. Good for spotting the bunnies.

dd thats a good heads up.They would be useless here over summer, the joint gets that hot that rocks are still warm to the touch at midnight. It would only be useful for me in the guts of winter it seems.

Have just bought an XQ30 and have had no problems seeing bunnies out to about 200m so deer and foxes would be very straightforward.
Four charlies on first outing, does everything i want, and follow ups very straightforward . MC

I have a XQ30 lite.

Spotted a deer sized heat source from about 700 meters no problem, partially hidden by a large bush. I then proceeded to carefully stalk in on a fermenting silage bale.............
