Well I've read this thread through, and I have come to the conclusion I'm old fashioned. (Or am I?).
What at ever happened to fieldcraft, what ever happens to appreciating the elements and anticipation of what you may see.
Being up at 3 in the morning arriving at your ground, assessing the wind and deciding what is the best plan. Seeing nature early morning is magical in my opinion.
Who cares if the paying guest blanks ( I bloody well don't), it's a privilege not a right, and certainly not for who's got the fattest wallet. Money certainly has a lot to answer for when it comes to proper deer management!!
So stick yer gizmos where the sun don't shine and learn some fieldcraft and teach it to your paying guests in the hope they may learn and appreciate their surroundings!

I presume from your rant that when you go stalking you use a rifle with iron sights and don't bother with binoculars

There may also be some used XD50S' coming up as people trade in for the XQ50 but be aware that the Pulsar warranty is not transferable from the original owner so worth buying new if you can.

I have one at upto 100 yards the XQ is slightly sharper than the XD due to the 1.3x extra on the optical mag, at distance you get a bit more detection range but the image quality doesn't improve, there still only 380 resolution. Personally I think there getting a little overhyped and you'd be throwing money away if thinking about upgrading from a HD/XD model to be honest, your not going to gain anymore usability out of it for 95% of existing users, but as an allround thermal looking at performance for money the new XQ are the models to go for, if your looking at buying your first thermal.

These are an aid not a total replacement of proper field craft ...
& technology wise a natural progression , same as Bruce says which he did quite politely when pointing out that telescopic sights are from iron sights etc

You are of course entitled & welcome to your opinion but just having these modern items doesn't mean all that have them are using them completely unethically

Yes, to me that is the biggest problem with them. A neck strap is a must and I slide mine under one arm, over one shoulder and bins round my neck..

Cyres thank you for your reply. I believe this technology can be used under licence for deer down South but not in Scotland.Not even if licence for lamping has been granted. There is a short piece in BASC mag. by Mike Holliday titled night vision.
Red Lab chimed in with info and as I said to him, a great tool if you have the quarry for it,which I don't,but was very interested in your discovering the fawn in the hayfield. Perhaps they should be fitted to Combine Harvesters.
Someone posted its use for effectively destroying rats so well worth the investment there....john

Heard of being put to good use in recovering a beast if it's a runner at last light say.
& of folk doing more convert surveys of their ground at night ( without rifle) to see what they actually have going about , with out flashing a lamp all over the place .
I borrowed a pals and used it to check for spots on my roof etc to see if new loft insulation had made a difference .

Thermal on a cold night is just fantastic and very good for getting a handle on your deer popultion. It quite surprising where you can see roe. As for rats quite easy to see them at 150+ yds on old stubble and scary to see how many we have on our chicken farms despite on going poisoning programme. Great on things like bats as they are so hot and watching barn owls hunting with a thermal is quite something. As you mention great for finding dead foxs in thick grass and quite vivid when you watch a fox as it is being shot esp with a varmit style bullet. Reveals all sorts of things and you can see how snakes us IR/thermal detection to locate small rodents which are normally v hot so extremly bright. Best thing about a thermal is you can watch all sorts of living things going about their normal day to day routines oblivious of you and this in itself is very educational.
