Puppy Vaginitis

Morning all,

Our 17 wk old puppy has a discharge which we think is puppy vaginitis. Before lockdown we took her to the vets who gave us antibiotics which did nothing. We went back and they gave us a different (and stronger) antibiotic which also did zip....

We have spoken again to the vet who is now talking about further investigation including scans/xrays which would entail putting her out and further sampling. This sounds a bit scary & we have looked on google and it seems lots of folk seem to think this normally clears up after the first season.

She certainly doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort with this and so would really appreciate if anyone has any experience with this please?

One of my bitches had Puppy Vaginitis. The Vet told me it was likely to clear up on its own.
I can’t say that yours doesn’t need further investigation. But in the case of my pup she had bouts of it till her first season and no problem since.

It will disappear with age/first season. It's common, it often occurs with puppy zits - probably licking and transferring the bacteria to the skin. If she's bright, well, pees normally, then leave her be would be my advice.

I’d agree with Buchan. It’s often self limiting and if she is well I’d be inclined to wait, especially given we’re just doing urgent and emergency work currently.

Thanks for the replies Gents. As said she is happy and healthy although still we do still have an occasional no 1 accident in the house. She was out in the garden yesterday, came in and within 2 mins tiddled on the mat! Not sure if this is the vaginitis or just the fact that she is too busy playing to remember to go or else still doesnt realise that it is not allowed!
