Pups and bones

Just picked up a wire haired vizsla cross Lurcher pup. Lovely little chap. My wife asked me if we could feed it the occasional rib bone or similar from my deer butchery. Anyone do this? I give bones away to some neighbours for their adult dogs with no issues.

How old is the pup?

When our Spaniels were pups they would get the occasional knuckle bone, but it would always be roasted as it is easier on their teeth and gums due to being a bit softer.

As they are now older, they get the hooves and lower legs of the fallow and roe we shoot, and it doesn't cause them any problems, apart from making them a bit bunged up inside.
We have always stayed away from the ribs and similar as they can splinter quite easily, and have always been led to believe that lower legs etc. are better in terms of bone construction and are at less risk of fracturing into shards.

So far no complaints 🤷‍♂️

Ribs are pretty soft so that they can be chewed quite happily. Leg bones depend on how strong your dog's jaw is. Mine will easily shatter leg bones into shards 3"-4" long that could easily cause him issues if swallowed, so I avoid that. He often has half a side of ribs from fallow and will polish the lot off in an hour or less. He also eats raw food daily, so his diet has no changes to mess with his digestion.

Thanks for all the replies. As usual all comments gratefully received. Think I'lll let him get a bit bigger and then see what's what!
