Putting the battery in the wrong way....

I've done this with devices and had no problem but I belief it can drain the battery (have you tried another?) or at the worst short circuit the device

Wild guess Smelly - is that what a “protected” battery prevents?
Here's what you should know about internals of 18650 cells ...
Inserting an 18650 battery upside down (reverse polarity) in a device can prevent it from working, and in some cases, damage the device or the battery, especially in unprotected circuits or parallel setups where it can cause overheating, short circuits, fires, or explosions. While many devices have protection, it's critical to always match the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals correctly, often marked by the button (positive) and flat end (negative).
What Happens:
  • Device Doesn't Work: The most common outcome is that the device simply won't turn on because the current can't flow in the correct direction.
  • Damage to Device/Battery: Some devices might not have protection (like a fuse or diode), allowing reverse current to flow, which can destroy components or the battery itself, as noted by electronics enthusiasts on Electronics Stack Exchangeand Quora.
  • Fire/Explosion Risk (Severe): In parallel battery configurations, a reversed cell acts like a dead short, leading to extremely high currents, intense heat, venting, and potential fire or explosion, warns Stack Exchange users.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

I have messaged Thomas Jacks for advice...
Bloody hell....where's that torch gone....
Funny thing is just for giggles I was going to try a torch again. It worked soooo well in those far-off pre-thermal and IR days and the fox was always in colour too…..
Might just do it tomorrow night, if it stops raining….

best and cheapest spotter you’ll ever get

Yeah, and I expect there won't be as many torch shy foxes!

i have the same spotter, thanks for the warning, will be very careful when inserting the battery, however if it has damaged the spotter, that is poor design as so easy to protect electronics from such a frequent and simple user error.

let us know what thomas jacks say.

Well it's not going well.
I have been advised to remove the battery and connect the charging cable which once started and shutdown will reset it.
Err no!
It starts up Via a cable but not via a battery internally. 😭

Hi smellydog have you tried said battery in another item and Will said battery even charge and holding charge or I am pretty sure you’ll have tried same make different battery and then try to do what they said
Just see post above 🤣
