The virulence of myxomatosis to species beyond its South American hosts was recognised pre WWII, and it was first used against rabbits in Australia in 1950., I believe. In 1952 Armand used it to control rabbits just on his land in France (he said) and the rest is history. Whatever you might believe about Wuhan, engineering viruses was a long way in the future back then.

It certainly is or until very recently spread very deliberately. Caught forest enterprise doing it numerous times and private estates would ask gamekeepers afar to catch a myxi rabbit and deliver it etc.
