Rash in bitches groin area

Morning all,

Our 4yr old female Weimaraners has developed a rash in her groin area. The skin not affected in the same area also looked to be very dry. We initially put it down to something that had been sprayed onto the fields we walk but now realise it must be something else.
The redness seens to come and go and always looks worse after a walk, presumably due to friction in the area. We will be taking her to the vet as soon as we can get an appointnent, but wondered if anyone had any idea what it might be please?

My WHV gets the same, I bathe the area in diluted hibiscrub then dry it and apply germoline for a few days and it's sorts it out.
I think with my bitch it's irritation from the mud which gets splashed there on the soft skin which rubs and that then lets bugs in.
She is 12 now and has had it for years on and off. It was a vet nurse friend who told me to bathe it but I found that the germoline soothes it best once the area is clean
Hope this helps

Thank-you may well try that. It looks particularly bad tonight after a long walk - Mrs D thinks it might be ringworm?

Something has irritated her and she’s licked and now has a low grade infection. Hibi bathing will help with that but not address the original itch. What’s your flea control

Gets treated with Frontline every 3mths. TBH we've never seen a flea on her. Could it be ringworm do you think?

More likely to be fleas. Frontline just doesn’t seem to be effective any more and 3 months is too long. Rub damp tissue across her fur. Any red streaks = fleas

Just done the damp tissue trick and nothing - as mentioned I've never seen a flea on her or our male who doesn't have a rash.

Once you have ruled out parasites I have seen dermatitis in that sort of area on thin coated dogs. Seems that when they are standing normally that area forms a skin fold and due to the lack of hair they get moist in there and crud can accumulate, this rubs while they are moving and can start off the irritation. Also seen it after they have run over something like Giant Hogweed. I usually advise that the area is washed well and then dried properly and then either Isaderm, an antibiotic/steroid combination cream (vet job) or savlon/germolene or similar and stop them licking it. If any doubt or it seems to be worsening then get it checked out as there ore other possible causes.

Update - went to our vet the other day and he thinks it's an allergy... Also thinks she has a minor ear infection and given us Peptivet oto gel & Otodine cleaning solution for that to be used alternate days and Ermidra shampoo for the allergy so we now have to attemot to bath her three times a week (that'll be fun!).

I'm not entirely convinced as nothing has changed since this started, so not her diet or the washing powder used for her bedding etc, but we will see. I'll let you know how it goes and we will also maybe try the Hibuscrub if the shampoo fails to have an effect.

Thanks to all for your input - much appreciated.

If you go the hibiscrub root like I mentioned earlier use the germoline as it is antiseptic and has local anaesthetic properties. I check my bitch regularly and any sign of redness as long as the skin is clean I apply germoline
Let's hope she gets sorted soon

My little dog caught mange while ratting and we eventually got it sorted but she also had red patches as you describe for ages after.
I treated her with tea tree and clove solutions.

Is there rats around your walks?

Thanks again to all for your input - no rats around here sadly SD (otherwise I"d have some sport!).
So an update - have to say despite my sceptisism, that the Ermidra shampoo is REALLY making a difference. We used the vets v.expensive 250ml bottle and have another one coming today from Amazon for about £15.
Two weeks ago she was amost hairless in the groin area and between the tops of her legs and the skin looked almost a bit scaly. Now, while the redness is still a bit visible, it looks much calmer and she is starting to sprout hairs everywhere! So hopefully all going in the right direction and we plan to keep up with the Ermidra shampooing every other day for a while and hopefully it will clear up for good.
