Rationing introduced for fruit and veg.

I live on the island and there's no shortage here mate.

This week alone Lidl have the following heavily discounted... Peppers, carrots, blueberries, potatoes, lemons, oranges, apples, easy peelers, cabbage, chillies and cucumbers.

That's just Lidl, no shortage in any other shops either and plenty discounts.

I was in a major fish wholesale market in the UK a few days ago and there was a big shortage of fish unless you wanted farmed stuff from the Faroe Islands.

Do elephants eat fish?
Your Irish press must be telling porkies then eh . A quick Google search will see they're reporting on the same shortages as our UK rags .

I was not aware that it had anything to do with the war in Ukraine; more to do with bad weather in Europe and Africa?
There are many factors at play, check out this article by the CBI.

That article is 5 months old but there are many factors at play indeed.....

Not to worry though, Government Minister Therese Coffey has come up with an idea for ye lads....

You're right about the weather, but it's both barrels so to speak.

The fuel prices has stopped UK heated green house production.

M
The same in Europe growers have switched to outdoor production due to the rising cost of heating and this cold snap has caused shortages across the continent.

Well I’m a vegetarian and haven’t seen any issue yet
Just eat what’s in season and use frozen veg more.
Plenty other plant based foods to use alongside fresh veg so hey ho

No shortages in any of the three supermarkets I've had to go into this week. As usual, it's a storm in a teacup whipped up by remainiacs and the more hysterical end of the press.
Is that the singer fella on Twitter?

Christ, with the prices they're charging in European supermarkets it's no wonder the shelves are still full.

Last night’s winter warmer, served with cabbage and potato, included swede, carrot, celery, onion and even a red pepper: “second day’s“ (cooked then left 24hrs, reheated thereafter) slow-cooked fallow deer fore-shanks. The swede is a grand root veg, not just for Burns night…

All of their produce is first class and the greedy big supermarkets must hate them.
Arnolds,the best joint in town.

Brace yourself mate, next week UK wholesalers will be paying double this weeks price for tomatoes and peppers, spinach will be 70% extra, cucumbers, coriander and dill 50% extra.

Not sure about turnips.

We get the majority of our veg direct from our local farm shop, who supply fantastic seasonal veg at fantastic prices.

I was chatting to the farmer there a couple of weeks ago before all the current media hysteria kicked off. He was telling me that many of the market gardeners have been hit by the recent intense frosts, which have decimated the production of brassicas in particular. There are farmers whose entire crops have been ruined - and that's farmers who have ground in Kent, Lincolnshire and the Home Counties.

We are not helped either by the recent trend to turn productive agricultural land into solar farms.

It took Russia's invasion of Ukraine to highlight how in hock most of Europe was to Russian gas, resulting in all the rapid adoption of all these hare-brained green energy schemes, and doubtless we'll soon face further food shortages because of the reduction in agricultural land.

Politicians really are the dumbest people out there, with no appreciation of the consequences of the constant stream of knee-jerk policies they rapidly enact so that they can be seen to be doing something, and thereby hope to fool the public to keep voting for them.

We'll see about that. Few people eat food which has passed through UK wholesalers hands any way, so even in the unlikely event that what you're saying is true, it will have relatively little effect.

Cost of heating energy is an issue too. British and European glass houses can produce early crops but the cost of oil and gas has held production back, meaning greater reliance on Mediterranean and African producers. Throw in a poor growing season down there and you've got a shortage.
