Keen to start using the dog for deer. He is a 12 month old lab and done most of the levels of gun dog training. He is enjoys his venison and offal, chews deer hocks and around deer when i bring them back to larder. I havent used him whilst stalking yet. He walks to heel well and is steady. He has been on peg for game shooting and when I check zero on rifle.

Messaged UKDTR and another on training but can't get a response. Got access to deer and land so keen to start some basic training myself. Had a look online and lots of choice so keen to get a recommendation on what to buy and use. Thanks.

Nothing special to do, just go and shoot a deer and see if the dog will find it, maybe a 'find' or simillar command when at the shot site (assuming the deer has not dropped on the spot).

Just take him with you. A lab will work it out fine for himself once he understands that you are after deer.

Once he knows the quarry he will naturally start indicating deer scent on the wind and paths, so you will have a deer radar that can see round corners.

I don't use any gear, but I know the dog is steady and will not disobey me and run in on a set of antlers.
