Recommendations for a 4 piece fly rod for small rivers

You know what one of the ironies of this is? I caught my first fish in the upper reaches of that river aged not quite four, squatting on a big flat rock, with a rod made of a length of hazel, a piece of line and a hook on the end, the sort of thing that garden gnomes use. And now I think that I need half a grand's worth of kit to do the same thing!

Remember it well the fishing tackle that is,a hazel stick was pretty much standard when we were kids, when I was about nine my father made, me a two piece rod from Brier, twelve when I got my first shop bought rod, had plenty rods since but had just as much enjoyment with my hazel wand.

If you are not a brand tart, John Norris will put together a complete outfit of Shakespeare Sigma 7' #3 four piece, matching reel and line for about £60 postage on top. You will have to find some loops and a bit of backing but then you are off.

If you speak to them rather than just ordering online, they will put the line and backing on the reel for you.
They have quite a few options for making up an outfit if you call though.

I'm a huge fan of john norris own brand rods and lines. I have built rods for years for people usually on Harrison blanks, but plenty on American blanks so have tried a fair few. before I met the john norris series bought a Thomas and Thomas 5 wt which is a beautiful rod. Point is the john norris rods in the short lengths give me no less joy than any of the others mentioned.
