I've used EOTecchs for quite some years now (going back to when they were solely marketed under Bushnell's "Holosight" brand). Today's EOTech sights are light years ahead of what they were initially, and good sights for snap shooting and close, rapid shots.
Downside? Batteries and power saving feature. Seems they always shut off at the inopportune time. When you add in the magnifier, I start to raise the "there are better options" flag.
When you figure you spend roughly $500 US for the EOTech sight, and almost another $500 US (or more) for the 3x magnifier, (IMHO) its time to start looking at the ACOG sights that use light gathering fiber optics (no battery) and are a straight 3x magnification.
As far as the sight plane delta/difference; while it does exist, I think real world applications are kind of a moot point for most calibers. 3" low is still going to punch a lung on a deer size animal, and in my experience people tend to hold over too much anyways.
Nothing against EOTech's, I have many of them myself. But when we start talking over $1000 US, I start thinking its time to move up to something else.
As far as Aimpoints...I've had stellar and abysmal products from them. When they work, they work well. When they don't...well, sometimes lessons are learned the hard way...
