Hi,

This is very interesting. I take my daughters out to see wildlife - owls and deer in particular, all over the Cotswolds, often at deer o'clock - last light. We can be driving quite slowly, on quiet lanes and looking at wildlife through binoculars - looks like I'll have to be careful!

That said, I would report, in a heartbeat, any suspicious vehicles and definitely any hare coursing or preparations.

If they've got the reg numbers, surely the police should be talking to the registered owners. Or am I missing something?

Depends on what evidence exists that they have been up to no good.
Knowing the vehicles being used, should mean that it is easier to put together a fuller picture of their activities, to then have a chat with consequences.

Dare I ask but is there not a data protection issue with this if the link between the reg number and the alleged crime can't be proved? Surely that's not right? As above by tarponhead there could be totally innocent details above which in the wrong hands could be misused?

Don't think there's any data protection issue for number plates. They are displayed front and rear for identification purposes for all to see. Records of owners is different though. The cops calling around to see them is possibly a good idea. Not sure it would do much except to let them know their vehicle is known though and these days I can't see many police areas sending patrols around to see people who potentially haven't done anything except perhaps a bit of country lane courting.

One issue with sending the police to chat to the owners is that they then know that the police know and they will either swap cars or just the plates so it's now harder to track them. Sometimes it's better to not let people know you're watching them and they're a lot easier to keep tabs on. Of course if you haven't actually got the time or resources to monitor them then maybe having a word will be all you can do to try and put them off.

So, posting this info on a public website, good idea?

Yeah the more decent folk who know and spot something odd may then report it if they're aware there is intel that vehicle is likely up to no good.

And people wonder why there are very few hare round my neck of the woods. All the local farmers shoot them and deer get hard hit too. Basically, it seems that the rural community have got sick and tired of having their land trashed, poachers and being threatened with violence. Its a real shame because the ones that loose out are the local inhabitants and the wildlife.

Personally I think this may have been a blunder as information and anonymity gave power to the authorities?
Just like shouting out to encourage a deer to stay for the shot?
Just an easy way of trying to look reactive and effective to the masses?

Now, change to dodgy number plates and carry on?

There must have been enough evidence to put them on a list?
So if reasonably suspected, what would have been wrong with the Police doorstepping them and waving a finger? If they are in?

Surely ANPR cameras would solve that problem pretty sharpish too if they were trying to track them?
