Reglazing (replacement) lenses for glasses - why so expensive..!?

Hello SD Members, long story short, local private options pushed really hard for me to get "anti fatigue" replacement lenses in my daily glasses...at a whopping £290 a pair! No way I said (actually I said I would return) next week. No problem they said, and also standard lenses were £100 a pair and if I get 2 pairs (I have a second pair for formal-wear), the second is half price. Still not good. I only went there because (a) my wife and kids visit them - they had a good selection of kids stuff and (b) Specsavers near me felt like being at an Asda and thought private would be better...

Question: has anyone had experience with the following:
  • Anti-Fatigue lenses - supposedly good if you use screens etc (but seems like a load of marketing BS to me)
  • Online reglazers? I'm looking at company called Lensology and they overwhelmingly look good in the reviews everywhere - the most snazzy coated lenses are ~£55 and they send you the post box etc
Hopefully some SD wisdom out there?

Many thanks in advance,
BRP

Not ‘reglazers’ but I have bought several pairs of glasses from Cubbits and have been very pleased with them. They do several more unusual frames.

Cubitts: The Modern Spectacle Maker

They are (I think) very good value, most glasses are £150 a set including Zeiss lenses. Delivery was quick, I had a problem with one pair and raised it with them, they paid for the postage back and replaced them very quickly. I would recommend them.

Hope that helps.
Best Regards

Really helpful, thanks - I walked past a few of these stores in London and always assumed they are ultra-luxe high end unobtainable. Ziess lenses with all the extras (scratch, uv, dirt, revlection...) included with frames for £150 all-in!? Pretty amazing! Just missing the hunting reticle . I might enter their store now...

Can’t comment on anti-fatigue lenses but as a spectacle wearer main stream opticians are becoming like vets making exorbitant mark ups frames are ridiculously expensive to actual cost same as lenses.
I now get my glasses online at a fraction of the cost.

I went glassesdirect, got two pairs for £48, not a fancy prescription, but if you do want all the addons they're still a lot cheaper.

I made a mistake of wanting to keep the frames because i liked the fact they were so light, frameless Titanium. The charge was no different if i had of had new frames, not told about this before hand, when i questioned the store assistant she said that the fee was for the lenses not the frames. Not a happy bunny and would not recommend Boots Opticians due to poor customer service.
So at that rate the frames are free ?

Thankfully at present I only need glasses for reading. So it's Specsavers for me. They generally last a couple of years, which is the time between eye tests. A couple of pairs for around the £60 mark. Although I do wonder if those off the stand cheapies for around £15 or so would do just as well. In fact I keep a pair in the car for emergencies. They don't usually last 2 years though, so probably a false economy. As for Boots, that's where my wife has gone in the past and I think their stuff is good quality but isn't half expensive. As for customer service, I suppose that's probably down to the staff in the branch.

Definitely!

I did the Specsavers 2-for-something deal 2 years back and since then had the lenses swapped out once by them. Right now it looks like £55+post for a direct swap with lensology or buy new online or elsewhere. I'm tempted to go with the swap with my less regular formals and get something snazzy new. will still be less than the private optician was charging and perhaps even less than specsavers once you add all the coating extras.

I went spectators after I got something g in my eye and my local optician wouldn't check remove it without an appointment.....couldn't drive to next big town A&E .... walked into specsavers eye watering they sorted it out immediately ...

Now try having a lazy eye ... mortgage eynalls one fixed one variable ....each eye has different prescription and a prescription for distance and close ! ...varifocals top ones with bighest areas in each zone ...antiscratch and frames ( their own nowt fsncy ) £280 !!!

I might look online next time

Paul

I need glasses for distance vision. Last visit for glasses, sunglasses & photo chromatic shooting glasses was approaching £1000.

Just been to Specsavers. £400 ish for lightweight frames and light weight Varifocal lenses with anti glare and anti scratch coatings.
2nd pair of Polaroid sunglasses with the same prescription free.

It's a lot of money but tried online guys in the past and results have not been good.

Quick update for anyone interested or those that come back to this thread in the future I did a reglaze of my "spare pair" with this company ans it was fantastic...recommend (no commisons etc for me). I'm doing my daily specs with them now it was 55£ for the full works with every coating and add on

Online re glazers are very good the company I used to use went bust but I tried Lensology and they seemed ok and very cheap £60. Actually the lenses came
back damaged but they rectified in a week and there fine now.
