Reloading 12 bore eco friendly load

I don’t load yet for shotgun but am going to start to be able to make a more friendly load. Thinking steel with non plastic wad and reusing the shells.

Can anyone give any guidance? I will buy a lee load all.

Thanks

Not sure if there is a viable bio plastic cup yet. If your shooting steel you will need a shot cup/wad. Barrel friendly eco shot (not steel) is available but the cost would make your eyes water.

Good luck

Steel has to have a plastic wad at the moment so your looking at bismuth or tungsten will need a second mortgage claygame ar possibly your best bet for up to date info please do not try to improvise loads in shot guns p.s. i have a lee doing nothing in 12g &20g Dave

Thanks Dave - it looks like Eley have done it for me with a decomposable steel shot wad. Wonder if loaders will ever be able to buy them? I can reuse the shells at least then

Gamebore make a steel load with a fibre wad (silver steel) very expensive though. One of the marshes I shoot the farmer won’t have plastic wads and these are the only ones I could find that are cheaper than bismuth, tungsten etc

I reload for my 12 bore Rem 1100. Was great when lead shot was still an acceptable loading and the price wasn't like it has been this passed decade or more (i.e. HIGH too!), but reloading steel WITHOUT a plastic cup is currently an impossibility if one values the internal barrel surface, which is a shame indeed!.. I am certain that some adventurous shooting accessories company will produce a bio-degradable plastic cup that we reloaders can also use in our home-loads, but 'when' is another matter. Good luck with this quest 'Essexsussex', you are not alone, be assured!

Plastic is not necessary. It's the cheapest and that is why it is used with steel.
If the law all those years ago not only banned lead but plas wads too then we would have steel and card cup wads today.

But unfortunately, for the present at least, Plastic IS necessary to keep the pellets from ruining one's bore if steel shot is used in one's home-loads if using proprietary items in the loads....

Got a slab of H&H bismuth been sitting around here for a while now its 25gr 7 1/2 , you can use as is or pull the shot and reload as required .

There is a website www.claygame.co.uk which has "fibrewads shot cups" suitable for all types of shot. It says that you have to slit the fibre cups part way down before loading, and use a nitro wad card underneath the cup to act as an obturator. Have a look
