Reloading large and small CF calibers

Folks, maybe a daft question. I’ve done basic reloading for the .270/6.5 for years now. I do have a .222 but just shoot factory. I use a RCBS hand primer tool for reloading.

Am I right in thinking I’ve to do more than just adjust the case/shell holder to make this work for the .222? Otherwise it won’t seat the primers correctly? It seems quite fiddly. But also seems daft to have two primer tools? Although that may save hassle down the line.

Any suggestions what the most effective way around this would be appreciated. I find them quite fiddly things!

On my RCBS hand primer you have a smaller rod and small primer plug to use to allow it to seat small primers. Instructions can be found online if you need them.
Cheers! I’ll have a look for the instructions. Is it quite quick/straightforward to change between the rods and primer plugs if you’re using it often?
Just buy a SH original Lee Primer tool. Easy to use and great feel as you insert the primer.
D

Would the Lee need a different case holder than the RCBS? Guessing so?

Iv used many but the lee bench cheap as chips tool has been one of the better after many thousands it just turned up its heels! So got another.

It's fairly straight forward. Just tip the primer tool over so the rod falls out, then (holding the handle just slightly closed) unscrew the draw bar from the handle (just as if you were normally changing shell holders) and remove the plastic insert and shellholder. Insert the other plastic insert, along with the .222 shell holder, feed the draw bar back through the plastic insert, and tighten the screw on the handle to secure the draw bar in place. Drop the smaller rod down into the plastic insert.

Easy peasey.

If you have lost your spare rod and plastic (small primer) adapter, call RCBS. They'll likely send you both free of charge. Mine was 35 yrs old, and the plastic broke. I called RCBS and offered to pay for a replacement, but they said no, they'd just send one in the mail and asked for my address.

FWIW I load for both .270 and for .204 Ruger so I use both large and small rifle primers. I use a Lee Auto Prime (hand held jobby) and used to faff about changing it from one to the other. A scan of the Classifieds on here and for the princely sum of £20 (IIRC) I now have 2 of these .. one that stays set up for large primers and one for small. No faffing about and always to hand for easy use.

Go on .. smash your piggy bank and treat yourself to a second primer setter now instead of waiting and faffing for a few years before deciding to do it anyway
