Remington 1889

Hi all,

I've recently been gifted a Remington 1889, however I can't seem to break the barrels. When I slide the top lever across it doesn't release the barrels, does anybody have any ideas of what this could be or am I simply doing something wrong. I've tried to do a little research myself and I think it could possibly have a broken top lever spring, if this is the case, can this be repaired and what would be a rough cost.

Thanks

A broken top lever spring shouldn't stop you opening the barrels. Only not give that assistance to return the top lever back to "fore and aft" once you.ve closed the gun. It may be that you are not pushing the top lever far enough across to retract the bolt that locks into the barrel lumps? How much is a new top lever? On most guns it will be a simple V spring possible with a peg to hold it in place. They shouldn't be too expensive but the fitting of them might be. Try Chambers, Airgun Spares aka Knibbs, Helston Gunsmiths.

The top lever seems to stops after sliding it across, i'll try and see if I can push it a little further across. Thanks for the reply.

Im mistaken, the top lever allows the barrels to break, I can take the fore grip off but the barrels won't release from the action and there's no further travel on the lever or spring to bring it back into position, you have to physically bring it back.

A long shot but sometimes the right hammer can foul the last fraction of movement of the top lever needed to open the action. They sometimes get bumped and bent in bound a fraction. Is the lever touching the right hammer when operated?

do you mean, is the hammer touching the pin when not cocked? If so, no it is not touching.

Maybe a silly question but have you checked that it is unloaded - a firing pin can stick in a primer potentially leaving a second barrel “live”!
Use a cleaning rod to measure the inside and outside lengths - if one or both are 2.5 or 2.75 shorter inside then your problem may be bigger than you thought!
