Reporting Poaching

Surely BASC and other groups could propose all there members work with the police wildlife officers.

WE did over 15 years ago. Wildlife crime officers are now thin on the ground - BASC has never, so far as I am aware, had a major role to play in detecting or reporting wildlife crime. Very willing to be proved wrong.
Shoots get poached - apart from the obvious culprits, often by ex -shoot beaters (just my experience).

Can't fault the police around us. They take poaching very seriously. I think it helps a lot that a significant number of the local officers have a genuine interest in the countryside and a lot are from farming backgrounds. Taking to friends in other rural areas, it is simular elsewhere.

How much of poaching is blamed on legal shooters it is time for us to all to agree and protect shooting for the future. Lets unite with police and the antis to fight this if only

The deer on my permission have been wiped out over a couple of weeks once corn was cut. Padlocks cut off with angle grinder. Farmer started to put bales behind gates but they are still getting in. He ploughed in 3 carcasses in 1 large field.

The end of many a expensive chain and padlock,the battery powered angle grinder.We had a very expensive padlock and chain cut up into small pieces and left on top the gate post as if to say up yours and don’t waste your money.The field they drove around looked Like it had been used for grass track racing.

If possible get a trail camera installed high up on a tree well out of reach covering the gate and put a few cheap chains and padlocks on.
The longer you can keep them there cutting through the chains the better the chance of getting images and information on who they are. A trail camera which send images to your phone will also alert you to when it is occurring and enables you to report it to police ASAP.

But if the camera is out of reach there’s not much they can do especially if the images from the camera have been sent to your phone. If they cut down the tree with the camera they will be there even longer.
It is time for those of us who live in the countryside to not be defeatist when it comes to rural crime, we need to use our skills and ingenuity to inconvenience and disrupt the criminals.

Last time I phoned I got a call back from a patrol car in the area, he said "are they big rough lads" I said "probably" and after a bit of muttering said they were a bit busy, probably best come look when it gets light.

I hope you updated the police senior officer for your area and initiated a complaint about that experience if it is true.

If the above happens complain to your police commissioner until you get a response from them. Always do a paper trail so they cannot deny it.

Seems to be a few sceptics, must of been there. The last time I ever phoned regarding poaching they did not come out, I was told they needed backup as they didn't know who they were facing and backup simply wasn’t available; I went out myself and it ended up with a bit of a tense standoff shining lamps at one another and a bit of name calling.
The following day we had a visit but they'd obviously gone by then.
The police said they'd recently had some fairly excessive violence so it just wasn't worth the risk and they didn't want to go into a dark wood by themselves and I suppose that's understandable.
In the larger picture its about prioritys and the police are working with diminished resources.
The area went through a period of fairly constant activity and got a bit wild west with not only poaching but off roading and the usual quadbilke machine thefts etc even a body dumped once.
Not actually blaming the police, I think it's society that as some major problems and the police are somewhat the last resort.

In my experience its a total waste of time other than getting a crime reference number , ever tried platting fog ? It's a hell of a lot easier than getting help from the police in a rural area for poaching .
The removal of rural police housing was the first step I the wrong direction , now let's say its a really dead evening in the towns and you get a coppervout ....... he /she won't know where the heck they are and thier mobile probably won't have signal so chances of finding you in any workable period of time is very unlikely

I've been shot at when trying to confront these morons. (shotgun)

The police did finally turn up to investigate, 20 hours later.... and advised I keep away from anyone I see when out foxing.
