Rifle recommendations in 6.5mm Creedmoor?

FAC application submitted (sometime ago!) and after much reading I’ve come to the conclusion that 6.5mm Creedmoor would be a good all-round first calibre given the type of shooting I’ll be doing (mainly deer but some gong bashing too).

Budget around £1,500…

Here is my long shortlist of rifles:

Tikka T3x Lite
Browning X-Bolt
Beretta BRX1
Sauer 100 Classic XT
MAUSER 12 or 18
Haenel Jaeger 10

Any other suggestions welcome! Many thanks.

Go and try all of them and see how they feel and fit you - it really depends on your specific feel of the rifle.

All will most likely outshoot you, and all the rifles listed are known to be good rifles.

Decide if you want a straight pull vs BA etc…and again you can do that by picking them up and seeing how they feel. Decide on things like magazine feel when inserting and ejecting, do you want a top loading mag? Do you want double stack? Most are happy with 3-5 round mags but would you need more?

Hope this helps and good luck!

Gixer

Great advice! Thank you.

Is your budget for just the rifle or for a scope and moderator as well?

Weight is also something to bear in mind - not sure how the others stack up but the T3X Lite won’t weigh much with the standard stock. Also plenty of aftermarket parts available for them!
Budget for just the rifle.

Yes, the Tikka is the obvious choice and very popular for plenty of good reasons.

Although I find the German rifles slightly more attractive, visually…

As @gixer1 mentioned, I should probably go try a few.

I would be keeping my eyes peeled for something like this…..(no connection to seller!)

@Jack3 buy this and buy it now!

Any of those will do nicely go for a feel the berreta seems a bit plasticky to me but I’d happily shoot anything else on the list pretty much till I shot it out !

And as mentioned you’ll need a moderator definitely (£250?) and a decent scope 600£ ish for a fixed or 1k ish for a variable?? Obviously second hand scopes will be less and dealers usually give great deals on a entire setup

Get out and visit some gunshops see how you chosen rifles fit you and if possible get to shoot them.
Steve Beaty has a range and a good selection of rifles in a lush gun room, there are probably others with simila set ups.

Handle the rifles, ideally a 2nd hand one with a scope and moderator as that enables you to evaluate the package.

If 10 of us did this you might get 7 answers. The only answer that matters is yours.

Me it would be the Sako.

Small detail, if say thinking of e.g a Mauser, consider whether it can be re-barrelled in the future.

Some such things nowadays use a press-fitted barrel with the bolt receiving lugs machined into it, not in the receiver. Basically they are disposable when shot out. Probably fine for stalking use only, even when worn far below acceptable target standards, but if playing with gongs, long distance, or target work, the 6.5 CM, whilst not in the barrel burning category of say a 243, will only last so long. Whereas a 308 will last a very long time.

A trad. screwed in barrel design will give you the option to re-barrel in the future, maybe even using something much better than the factory one.

I have a sako 75 that I have rebarreled to 6.5creedmoor. It is a great action with a double stack magazine you can feed from the top if needed. Can fit barrel profile and length to suit your needs when you rebarrel a rifle.
I also have a tikka t3 rebarreled in .243.
Both more accurate that myself. The tikka is a very nice action and trigger, also as popular can get all sorts of accessory’s for it as and when you choose.
For your budget I would be tempted with a tikkabecause they just work. There is a reason why they are popular. I’ve had a bergara and again a great option. You will have to decide if gongs or stalking are main priority. Light weight of mainly stalking, but will need to let it the barrel cool a bit when on gongs. Once it’s shot out after around 2k you will have a great action to rebarrel.
Just my thoughts.

Have a Sako 491 with varmint profiled Bartlein I rebarrelled a while ago in this cartridge

Sat ready for work at your budget price

Ceracoated action and barrel

Devcon pillar bedded
The OP's list of new rifles is what i would look for if looking new.

I bought my first rifle from new (T3, circa 1k), and my second rifle SH (£900) - as it turns out Ronin had rebarrelled it for the previous owner.

Night and day difference between the rifles.

The stock is better (stiffer, more solid, and comfier to use).

The barrel is far quicker to clean.

The rifle shoots MOA, to the same point of impact, with every brand of ammo I've used to date.

And it was CHEAPER!!

Ill let the op work out which one I'm talking about.. :)

My advice, since the OP was asking, is that buying a SH semi-custom is the best possible way of getting the most bang for your buck. New rifles need to give their companies profit, SH rifles need to recoup some funds for the previous owner. No brainer!

Edit: i have no skin in the game with any SH rifle on SD currently, it's just my opinion
