rifle restoration project

yes! first one I have done, still learning.....and was cursing!

no progress due to Christmas and New Year.
hoping to get the bluing underway in the next week or so.

boilers are up and running!

am taking a punt on re-inventing the wheel here with vertical burners and electric power. lower surface area means less evaporation, vertical tube with heat source at the base means a more constant temperature and less need for huge row of burners.

Ingredients were mostly scrap and tools I already had:
10 feet of 3" stainless tube, a bit of flat plate, a hole saw, a MIG welder and 3 of Comet's finest £4.99 kettles.
The tubes were cut, flat plate had a hole of suitable size cut,

welded over end to create a 30" boiling tube with a base element. (required a bit of heavy handed rewelding as I sprung a leak due to shoddy welding!)

Currently boils a tube of water in about 7mins! rough volume 3.8-4l
Without the thermostat that cuts off the kettle normally it just keeps heating and boiling away.

Hopefully he tube should give me plenty of width for a barrel and three of them give me a degreaser, a rinser and a bluing tube.
If not it has only cost me £15 in kettles!

Not tried it in anger with salts yet, going to rig a nice frame for the tubes before I do that.

today is D-Day!
Or should that be Blu-Day

tested it last night, very happy with result on smaller bits
also got a wonderful blue on the bolt removal clip from a pure KNO3 "Nitre" bluing.
will post pics asap

ACE! well done, did you get your thermometer?

also, sorry I haven't posted you pics of the niter or flame bluing, the Mrs won't let me use her Iphone in the shed:cuckoo:,,so I think I'll have to bring it all indoors for a photo shoot.

tried my damdest to take a picture that shows the colours.
need a studio!

the small panel in the side bolt retainer is a lighter blue, guessing due to its size
the floor plate and trigger have a nice darker hue that still shows off the metal colour with the iridescent heat tempering effect depending on the light.

The hot acid black bluing I did on some small bits last night is exactly as I would want. dark, thick and black!
mind you, be warned, it is nasty stuff and ate one of my welding gloves!! luckily I was prepared and had rubber gloves on underneath!!

plan to do a proper degreasing later and run the tubes hot for a while

crap pictures but progress nevertheless!

All the bits and bobs in black, bolt and trigger guard have to go in with barrel as they are too long for the pan. Flor plate, trigger and bolt release have been nitre blued for some contract.
underside of bolt head looks brown in the photo but it is just a rough spot reflecting I think

didnt manage to get barrel done today.
aim to get it done for some range work on Sunday!

very nice indeed ,sorry i have forgot all about the foresight hood and stain ,i must send it off, wayne:oops:

What speaks French has two thumbs, a nice shiney blue black rifle,a big cheesy grin and £200+ he didnt spend on having someone else do the bluing/refinishing?!

Moi!! [Whilst pointing at oneself with said thumbs]

had a small disaster, two out of three kettle elements turned out to be dead and the one that did work I managed to smash whilst manhandling the workmate.
unperturbed I fired up various camping stoves and blow torches and heated the tubes directly on the outside.

I only had barrel, bolt and trigger guard left to do as everything small went in the pan I did the small bits in.
It came to the boil quite quickly and with some practice I could keep the rolling boil going with the hand held blow torch up the side.
Only catch with vertical boilers....they work so well you better be paying attention as they can boil over in a flash!

Anyway, degreased, boiled, brought up to temp I did the little bits first (on the basis I didnt have the balls to mess up the barrel first!)
school boy error I forgot to degrease the bolt and it came out with my finger prints blacked into it!

trigger guard was fine.

On to the barrel while I sanded down the bolt...again!

Barrel given one more quick once over with 2500 grit and soap, boiled and brought up to temperature.
not sure exactly how long I cooked it for, probably a good 20 mins, kept checking progress for colour

Once out if the hot caustic I rinsed with boiling water straight from the kettle, dipped in the "water only" boiling tube for a quick further rinse then gave it a good hosing with WD40.

I then put the bolt back in.
It has come out a bit of a unusual colour but I actually love it. Its a sort of browny black with blues and greens!
It has all the iridescent hues that temperature blueing gives its just not as even as I would have liked.

May polish it in parts and leave the hues in the main.

All in all I am 'kin delighted.
Very cheap rifle now looks like new (but not too new) for probably £50-60 outlay in total (chemicals, £15 on redundant kettles! and a new butt pad)

the results:
(Pictures were tricky and don't really do it justice IMO)

have this evening to try and remember where all the bits of the action go and refit to the furniture.
cant wait to see if it shoots!

haven't fired the bloody thing yet!

and no that is not buffalo horn. that plan has been shelved!

Bloody scope mount screws dont fit at the front though so may have to christen it with old school iron sights!!

Really enjoying reading about your restoration project bewsher & I'm loving your ingenuity with your DIY skills and "having a bash" attitude, particularly the bluing project.
This is a credit to you and I'm sure the rifle will shoot all the sweeter knowing it's all your own work and dedication which will hopefully get a deer or two for you soon.
Keep us updated.
cheers

Well done Ed:tiphat: there's one rifle you will never sell. like my wife keeps saying about my CZ ZKK restoration project, 'that's your baby'!...LOL...well..yeah, it sort of is:oops:

here's a question for you.
the left over solution. I assume it is still good for more blacking, but how do you maintain the concentration?
I havent lost much volume but assuming a chemical reaction has taken place some of the reagents must have been altered in the process.

Do I just top it up with some more NaOH and KNO3?

I also have two little short screws left over!! (identical to the action "keeper" screws)
I am buggered if I know where from!! no screw holes left anywhere.
all internal parts are pinned or screwed back together. everything cycle and clicks as it should.

very odd

Yeah storing it...hehehe....;)

It will creep out of a tank! Best solution that I have found is to keep it in a seal-able plastic bucket à la Swarfega type, then it does not creep anywhere!
It will store and you can add the chems to perk it up for odd jobs.
Concentration remains, question is just how 'active' the solution is after being used (hence 'perking it up').
The water content is there really just to achieve the temperature so is not a worry.
I usually tend to make up new as I need it.

As to the screws.... not septic so cannot help :D

Have a large tub with sealable lid that I have it in, then taped the lid join with electrical tape! not going anywhere.

screw are driving me nuts.

but the scope is on
