Rimfire Scopes

Hi all,
I’ve been using an old Optisan EVX I had on an air rifle on my 22LR, I thought I would have an upgrade and got myself a Hawke Vantage 30mm with the 22LR reticle. I’m not overly impressed with it to be honest, half the battle is owning Nightforce scopes on my bigger rifles.

Is there such a thing as better glass that stays suitable for 22LR up to 75 yards? I’ll probably look to get something for the 17HMR as well with a bit more mag for our to 150 yards.

I don’t want to be spending £1000’s or end up with a 56mm objective and lots of weight. So something with nice glass but smaller is where I’m aiming for.

I have spotted the Leupold VX Freedom rimfire scope. Just worried as that’s cheaper than the Hawke one I’ve just purchased so wasn’t sure on the quality of that.

As always links to kit are welcomed.

Cheers

Andy

Big fan of Hawke scopes myself but bought a Sightron S Tac 3-16x42 and was so impressed I bought another one, both replaced Hawke Sidewinders.

Vortex Crossfire line of scopes.. I've one on my .22 and honestly wouldn't change a thing. Regularly shoot rabbits from 25 to ~80 meters and was plinking targets out to 120 with it (max range I had)

Burris made a dedicated quality scope for RF . i had one quite a while , was great shooting targets and the Paralax was adjustable at RF distances . For hunting rabbits and such up to 100 yards ? I just use S&Bender 6x42 personally you aint got time to mess about twiddling Paralax or dialing in , just get the thing shot ! Great it bad light , holds zero through a nuclear apocalypse and bought second hand if you dont get on with it there will be a long list of folks wanting to buy it off you . If you use velociter ammo you can get to about 75 yards or so without trajectory holding !

They are good for the money those STACs. I had done of my .22LR which I sold, so it is available for sale.

I've had a 1" tubed Hawke Frontier on my .22lr since the new year, optically a step up from the Sidewinder, in a more compact package. Reasonably prices too.

To be fair to Hawke, the Vantage is at the lower end of their range. The Frontier and Endurance models are better performers. I switched my S and B 6 x 42 on my .22LR for a Hawke Frontier so I could use the Pard on it and I don’t feel it’s at all inadequate.

I've got an 8x56 schmidt on mine, it's brilliant for lamping.

Not mega money either about 300 quid.

Hawke are good value for money but I wanted somthing that's good in low light.

Mill dot ret isn't a deal breaker, I just learnt where to shoot. 85 yards I just hold off the rabbits back and the round goes straight into the engine room

Considering its a rimfire, you'd be shooting rabbits mainly, low light capabilities wouldn't be that high on my list, I just use a lamp on the bunnies when it gets too dark

Thats the thing I found with hawke, they were awful when lamping with my eyes so that why I went to the schmidt.

And for for the same price second hand they are worth it

Big fan of Leupold - I have one on my 10/22 and it’s fantastic glass. It’s the 3-9x40 rimfire scope 👌🏻
Me too. I have a 20 year old (at least) VXII 3-9x40 on my .22lr. I bought it for £100 from a mate about 13 years ago. It's a great rimfire scope. Tough and robust with low light performance way better than you'd expect from a 40mm object and I like the long posts with the very small centre crosshairs to the reticle which works really well on small targets like a rabbit's head when the rest of it is hidden in the grass.

Reticles these days can be too smart for their own good. There's a lot to be said for crisp, fine and uncluttered.

I also have a Meopta Meopro steel tubed 6x42. It's not in use at the moment but it would make a great .22 scope. Clear and bright and no-nonsense.
