After a recent thread on Spanish brandy, which I unintentionally deviated slightly, I thought I would create a new thread on the subject of rum.

What’s your favourite rum, aged, or non-aged? Providence? Tasting notes?

As someone, who’s Flirted with a few aged rums over the years, and increasingly so recently, I’m keen to hear tips / suggestions from other rum fans.

to kick us off; this is a bottle I bought, on a whim, about 4/5 years ago. An interesting Nicaraguan 18-year-old rum, with an apt name!

I like Duppy Share spiced rum, lots of ice and lime, and mixed with ginger beer very refreshing on a hot summers night (remember those?!)

Rum and ginger beer with lime is God Tier.

Used to cause a few accidents serving Appleton 151 to the matelot's and pongo's in Gibraltar quite a few years back, awful stuff.
Woods was my my favourite.

151 was too 'bitey' to be properly enjoyable, but Appleton Special was by far the easiest drinking rum ever made IMO. Why they stopped making it is beyond me. Appleton Estate is about as good as it gets for me now.
I have a bottle of 15 year old Appletons Black River that's being saved for the weekend we celebrate Lady Longstriders "special" birthday later in the year.

Skoh has an aftertaste of burnt molasses that I don't enjoy, and Woods is a bit too heavy for my taste.
You can keep anything with spices in it. When I drink rum I want to taste the rum !

Appleton Special was described perfectly to me by a seasoned connoisser of the brand (in Jamaica) .... "It gotta be good for ya, man. It's just distilled sunshine ! " I later found him fast asleep under a bush in the gardens. Too much sun I think !

Havana club 7, great in a dark and stormy pretty good neat too. For ~£20 a bottle when on offer its a bargain for what you get.

My son keeps me supplied with rum agricole from France, St James is very passable as are several others.

Personally I quite like Kraken or Old Woods but for sheer effect Bascardi 151% (I first met up with it in the States) has to be the stuff of nightmares! I don't think it's available here!

Currently in stock in my dresser there are opened bottles of Pusser's Gunpowder Proof, Wood's Old Navy and of course the afore mentioned Diplomatico No.3.
I've tried a few of the supermarket stocked rums, quite liked the Duppy Share (non spiced) and also the Havana Club 7yr old.

They're all very nice though the Pusser's does need a touch of spring water with it being 54.5%. The Diplomatico though is on another level, definitely just a sipping rum taken neat, lovely aroma and very smooth going down.

There's a pub and bottle shop in York named 'The house of trembling madness', down in the basement they have a very nice selection of spirits which includes more than a few rums. I quite like the look of one or two of the pricier Mount Gay, maybe for my next big birthday in a few years, if you're reading this dear.

Gosh, this thread is taking me back many, many years.
From a legal drinking age rum was my favourite tipple. Then, as I 'matured', I ventured onto other cocktails in fact, I seem to remember one called a Green Monster that was popular in the students' union at the time.
A few years ago I came back to rum once more.
However, following a new medication last year I can't take any amount of alcohol. I do miss my rum (Woods)

Everyday drinking rum I like bounty rum. 2 years old. From st Lucia. Tasting notes rich raisin fruit and a hint of honey and vanilla spice from aging.

Appleton's has a reasonable selection depending on your wallet.
