My jeep/workgun has become shot out,in .222 rem!
This my go to rifle for nearly everything on the ground
I priced a new barrel but could buy 2 new .223 rifles for the same money!
I am looking a 2nd hand barrel with some shooting left in it
I just want to get my most versitile gun back in the game
I have an rfd chum for the transfer

How much are the 223 ?

A new barrel can be fitted for circa £900 with a highly reputable gunsmith.

I was quoted £1300 for a new tube!!
I am only looking a few more years out of this rifle,so not looking to spend anything over £250
You’ll be lucky pal.

A Sako 75 barrel from original will
Be a fair age now , and if you do get one the chances are you’ll be spending good money on a bad barrel.

Ask @Ronin if he has any space or advice.

I have been asking around, contacted ronin a while back with no reply
I am not looking a new barrel, one that has been removed for replacement with a few hundred rounds left in it
Just want to see my time out with my old rifle

To the best of my knowledge, all sako barrels (A, 75, 85 etc) have the same tenon thread, across the similar cartridge and action size.

Are you just asking just for a barrel?
Or someone to supply and fit a secondhand barrel?

I'd be surprised if any reputable gunsmith would get involved in the latter.
Sending it to proof, would take a big chunk of the 250.
Who's liability would it be, if the re barreled rifle will not group?
Sounds like a load of time and hassle for no reward.

Buying a good used rifle might be a better way forward.

Apologies

I must have missed your contact (it happens)

I do not have any take off barrels that are of any use - all barrels removed are from folk whos weapons have ceased grouping due to wear, condition or damage

Spending money on a used take off barrel is akin to Russian roulette- unless you know the source of the barrel with proof it shot pre removal, I wouldn’t bother

There is also the issue of head spacing as not all Sako 75/85/ T3 etc have exactly the same action length or bolt lug dimensions - a barrel at the upper end of tolerance matched to a action on the other end of tolerance Coukd lead to too large headspace and out of spec for proof

I have a 10 twist Phoenix R4 profile 224 barrel sat on the shelf from a customers buikd who has “gone silent”

That is available to do “right now” - but with fitting you would be quite a distance from what you’ve mentioned you’d like to pay ,,,,,

Anyone reading this looking for reasonably quick turn around on a 222,223, 22-250 the barrel has large enough shank for Rem , Howa etc and can be turned down to Sako:Tikka shank if necessary

if my barrels shot out i would just get a new one fitted, if your exhaust fell off your motor would you go get a new motor no you would get a new exhaust barrels wear out its the nature of the beast, ronin above speaks wisely, no bull**** from him, i wouldnt hesitate excuse the pun, but just bite the bullet, and get a new one thats my honest opinion bs,

Your gun your choice @Scallopdiver but two things spring to mind, firstly would it not needed sending for reproof ? and secondly would the second hand value of something with a nice custom barrel on it negate the initial outlay ?
ie.
After you've done shooting your ole sako with a 99 % worn barrel would be worth pennies but your sako semi custom rifle with hardly worn in barrel at circa 200 round count could get you a good lump of your money back.

This is interesting, I always thought 75/85/T3 barrels were identical and thus interchangeable. Good to know.

They can be - but due to variations in tolerance, tooling, wear etc etc - it’s a lottery if you get something that headspace’s correctly
Tks Ronin, always learning!

If the headspace is wrong in such a case, can it be corrected? And, if so, would there be much work (thus expense) in that?

The barrel ends up in the lathe regardless of being too tight or too slack

If too tight issue is having a reamer that’s the same as the one that cut the chamber as it will need to be lengthened to fit correctly

If too tight this can be resolved by reducing the tenon length

Either operation takes time and some degree of machining skill to get right

Thanks again for the info, Ronin. Good to know 👍
