Wanted: Savage 1899 in .303 Savage

A worthy project.
I have had a takedown in .22 High Power made in the 1930s, and still have my scoped 1950s .300 Savage. Both are very accurate and fun to reload for.
I have read that the steel used in the earliest ones was not as strong as the later ones. Some have octagonal barrels (nice).
When you find one I can look up the age by its serial number for you.

Thanks HB. 👍
The .22 SHP takedown is a lovely little rifle (I acquired one myself last year). It got me thinking it would be worth trying to put together a set (.250-3000, .303, .300). So if you ever feel like finding a good home for your .300... 😎

I expect you know that the .250-3000 ones are like hen's teeth to find....

I foolishly did not know that when I passed up an excellent takedown 1899 last year 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ but I recently picked up a 99A in .250-3000, so that's something.

To be fair to myself, I hadn't caught the Savage bug at that point, and the rifle simply didn't push the buttons I expected it to. But over the next couple of months, I began to feel a hankering, went into "seek" mode, and acquired an 1899F in .22 SHP (5.6x52R), which I absolutely love.

Having tackled one weird and antiquated cartridge, I thought I would move onto another by way of the .303 Savage. This led me to the .250-3000 99A. I would rather have an 1899, but hen's teeth are hen's teeth.

In any event, if anyone has a .303 Savage, a .300 Savage or a .250-3000 1899 they are willing to part with, please get in touch.

Remember the 5.6x52R uses .228 diameter bullets which not many firms make. Copper could be ordered as it is only a reprogramming of the lathe.

Thanks. It seems Fox make a .228 for the 5.6x52 R and that Edinburgh Rifles will have some coming in soon, so I'm looking forward to trying those. Currently, I'm using Hornady .227s which are OK.
My current challenge is to make a new front sight blade to work with the peep sight on the tang. The standard blade is too low.

I assume you mean one like this one.
Sorry to say, but its in Denmark and not 303, but 300 Savage.

If you really want it I think you can make an agreement with this company, maybe call them, they definitely speak English. They also definitely know Lauriz.com.

Thanks you, that is most interesting. 🙏
I'll give them a call and see if that could work out.

Lee precision seem to offer two molds in .225" gas checked bullets.
I don't know if they could be lapped out but it may be an option for the HP

Sadly, no luck with the Savage in DK. Both the auction house and the recommended shopper were most helpful. The former was indeed very positive. However, the shipper says that, due to the obstacles created by the UK leaving the EU, the single market and the customs union, the cost would be north of €1,000. Those Brexit bonuses are everywhere!

That's sad.
Must be especially difficult to get rifles into the UK. My friend sold a rifle to Norway 3 years ago, and since Norway is not a member of the EU it cost extra transport and exportfee, totaling 1200DKR = £140.

The price for these rifles is typically 1000 DKr = £115 here in Denmark.
Except for the rare caliber 308 Win, which often goes up a bit higher.

Yes, great to see the low prices for the rifles, but it was made quite clear that the constraints of shipping to the UK made the overall cost too high. Perhaps I should just organise a city break in lovely Copenhagen and collect it myself!

Perhaps the Norway/ UK difference is that Norway is in the EEA which the UK left in 2020?
