Scope for low light : please help me choose between a Meopta R1 3-12x56 RD and a Delta Optical Titanium HD 2.5-15x56

A lot of my autumn/ winter hunts end in a shot taken at very last light, and I would like to get a high performance low light scope in the price range of these two scopes (with a high mag of at least 12) :

- Meopta Meostar R1 3-12x56 Red Dot (first focal plane 4C reticle)
- Delta Optical Titanium HD 2.5-15x56 SF (illuminated 2D reticle)

My eyes like reticles which are a bit thick which is why I consider these reticles. I assume the Delta Optical 2D reticle is thicker than their 4A-S reticle but can someone confirm this ?

Can you share your experience if you've used one of these in very low light ? How did they perform ?
Which of these two would you choose and why ?
Thanks for your help.

Run R1s on my centrefires and have to say they are a superb low light scope for the money.

The 3x12x56 is a very useful woodland scope, where it excels. Only downside is the relatively small 12 mag in open ground and being FFP, the dot does get a bit big over 200 yards.

Can’t comment on the other one, but thought it was more of a foxer as it works well with the Pard007.

As above, neither traditional optics will rival the new C50.

I have both
Well the R1r 3x12x56
It is up there with big guns in terms of low light performance
the delta is no slouch either but glass in meopta just “ pings” better when brought up to sight picture

Delta has edge on mag
And has side parallax if using digital NV add on
The meopta doesn’t bit if night vision not a concern then it’s better

Ideal would be the R2 with side parallax but like unicorns pee …

I have the R1 but in second focal plane.

The glass is as good as it gets in low light. All my glass is Meopta apart from my target rifle, and I would always recommend it for low light.

I have an R1 on my HMR. It's as good in low light as anything I've ever used. I rather like the FFP reticle but one of the reasons it ended up on my HMR was because centre does get a bit fat beyond 200 yards when you wind up the mag. But at HMR ranges with the mag left a 8X it's ideal.

I have owned both. In the UK the preference would be the Delta for allot of people as it works well with digital NV which is an important consideration here. In France though NV isn’t an option from memory?

The Delta 2D reticule is exactly the same as the 4A-S except it has two extra dots left and right. I haven’t owned a 2 Dot model but I have zero’d one for someone recently.

I think the Meopta might edge is low light wise but there isn’t a massive amount in it.

Ever thought about a Minox 3-15x56 Allrounder? Not that popular in the UK but more readily available on the continent I believe.

Slightly more money than the other two but a decent step up in performance and the reticule might work better for you.

Meopta R1 56 mm for low light. Use this for lamping with a very dim red light, at 8x mag 200 yds you see everything, & realise just how good they are, even when you only make out eyeshine with naked eyes.

Yes NV not legal in France.

Just wondering if the Op’s desire for a chunky reticle is something he might reconsider given the requirement is a low light scope with an illuminated reticle?

I don't like very thin reticles also for day light use.

Have a nice 56mm r2 illuminated in the classifieds 👍

I've looked through a Meopta R2 and wasn't fond of the reticle (too thin to my eyes)

Cheers all for your contributions. I went for the Meopta R1, as suggested by many of you who are using them and doing well in low light.
It is also a bit lighter than the Delta, by 110 grams (650 g vs 760 g).

By the way I got the information from an optics shop that the Delta 2D reticule is slightly thinner than their 4A-S.

The Minox All-Rounder suggested by @springbok787 would I think really suit me but is above my price point. It's reticle 4 illuminated seems near perfect to me (I had to download the instruction manual to find the reticle subtensions, they are stupidly not on their website). It also weighs 760 g like the Delta.
