Walked the 6.5 Cr on Saturday, first time out for just over a month. After shooting a couple of muntjac, a roe buck and a fallow buck last time, I needed a sika pricket for butchering for an owner. After seeing and leaving plenty last time around, I thought it would have been easy, but alas, only 2 shootable prickets seen, both too far with too little time and too many deer on watch, so I failed in my quest. It was an opportunity to see a couple of stags and to see if they've started calling as yet. No calling but saw 7 different stags, varying from a very long antlered pricket or a very poor 2nd head, which I left as I was sure to get a pricket later, just after a small 6 pointer was daring ne to shoot him, and then walked into a nice 8 pointer, laid up by a usual wallow in a favourite rutting stand. The 6 pointer was also to big for what I wanted and the 8 pointer wasn't big enough for me, although would be a fantastic trophy for someone.
He can wait until he's hopefully done his business as I'll be confident of seeing him hold this area for the foreseeable future. Lots of other areas marked up and wallows being used with the other stags spotted, all being average. Out next week doing a favour for the BDS by taking a chap out who's made a big donation to the charity, so I'll hopefully get to see a few other stags and hopefully that monster I've been waiting for. Last season I did see a stag one morning, that I had seen the year before, and after leaving him walk away, decided the following weekend that I'd ry for him. Very tall, good tines, but narrow in the beam, which I actually prefer, so if he's here or turms up later, I'll not let him walk if I'm carrying the rifle
Couple of frames from video showing the 3 mentioned, the rest were too distant for decent video.
