I'll disagree with you on that, BASC are supposed to be defending shooting, something I personally feel they have lost sight of. When asked what they were actually doing to change the licensing system (their words not mine) it went awfully quiet and it turned out they weren't.
In my personal view, not the views of others I'll add, they are the career politicians of the shooting world
Imagine if the licensing system was taken off the police and placed with a National Firearms Licensing Authority - with HM Inspectorate of Constabularies or something similar to report to Parliament; and fees and medical reports resolved, and mandatory turnaround times for applications and renewals, and 10 year licences brought in. Just imagine, all those ex-plods at BASC, and other time servers in their sinecures - they would be out of a job, and a pension. Clearly, it is not in the interests of the staffers at the BASC to achieve anything at all, and to carry on extending their brief on peripheral issues.

I think its only in this forum that there have been concerns raised which is perhaps food for thought.
An by this your insinuating what please?
I have personally stuck up for BASC on many occasions, both on here and also in private conversations with others,
However, on this issue "although I see the issues with them" I think the groups time and effort needs to be focused on more pressing matters, shooting and fieldsports in general are getting attacked on all levels an in all ways every day and I as a member feel addressing this is your prior not trying to get brownie points by supporting other organisations, "one of which is the rspca who will just stab you on the back at the next chance for fear of it damaging the credit an therefore the bank balance."
If we had nothing major to worry over I wouldn't have raised my concerns over your support but we do so please work harder as we are loosing the public opinion vote rapidly IMHO.
Regards Jimmy

I also have a memory of sky lanterns. I was called to a road traffic accident late one night. 2 horses had been scared out of a field by sky lanterns. One was hit at 60mph by a car and completely eviscerated. The roof of the car was flattened and the family in the car were badly injured.

I’m in favour of a ban.

I am very grateful for BASC's wide-ranging remit and thank them fully for their support of the ban of lanterns.

At best use of these is just wanton littering and at worst results in damage to natural habitats and animals. It depresses me that any user of the countryside would not support the ban, especially deer-people, who would normally have a much more intimate knowledge and understanding of their environment than most.

How could any countryside organization be taken seriously if it failed to support this ban?

I reckon all on here applaud B.A.S.C.'s support for the N.F.U. & others, The underlying issue is, the lack of a significant win for us over the myriad issues that are against us.

What 'brass'? Please explain?

I assume you mean 'counsels'? How much did BASC spend please? On what?

Read the name of the organisation properly....I think you'll find it involves '....conservation.' This certainly is something BASC should support. Be in no doubt, chinese lanterns are a serious and growing threat to wildlife, crops, stock and buildings. Anyone who cannot understand that does not understand the countryside at all.

Thanks BASC.
Thank you for your truly enlightening response.
I just hadn’t realised what a serious threat Chinese lanterns represent to the great British countryside and indeed, your property, health, pets, livestock and livelihoods.
Heck, your whole way of life is under threat. You should have spoken up sooner.
Ban them by all means, you might also consider expanding your campaign to include fireworks, or anything else that brings joy to others but impinges on your tranquil rural idyll.
Ban everything that you personally don't like or agree with and your going to end up with very limited options when it comes to amusing yourselves.
A little bit more tolerance required maybe?

Have just taken a look at them online. The ones for sale tend to describe themselves as 'wire-free', and are simply a bit of paper, some dowel/bamboo, and fireproof string.

Can't see how they are any more harmful from a littering or livestock-ingestion perspective than fireworks. Certainly less harmful than plastic shotgun wads (carrying all that eco-friendly steel shot).

Would also have assumed that the majority burn out while airborne, hence why we haven't all been burned to death in our beds.

I don't really care about these lanterns, but they make some people happy. I'm not sure I'd want to take that away from them.

PS I love fireworks. Would hate to see them banned too on the back of this.

All that said, please join my campaign against roll-mops on twitter: #vomit-fish.

This thread seems to have turned in an odd way, by suggesting BASC have got their priorities wrong means we support moorland fires and cow choking.
I personally think they are a hazard, but the voice of shooting should be more vocal on issues which directly concern its members

i think the issue with this thread is basc spout hot air or role over on matters to do with shooting, leaving members upset.
they have now jumped on a band wagon and want support.
most people are completely ambivalant about sky lanterns, most shooters use lead. which one should they be fighting for?

I was driving home from shooting one summer evening a few years ago and noticed dozens of these Chinese lanterns high in the sky alongside the dual carriageway. I have to admit it took me some time to work out just exactly what I was looking at. I was later to learn that these had been released by guests attending a wedding at a local hotel. I thought to myself that's a bit irresponsible considering the hay drying in the fields. The following day I read in the local newspaper that several grass fires had been started in the surrounding area and these had been attributed to the hundred or so lanterns released by the wedding party at the Glenusk hotel.

Some time later there was a proposal put to the Welsh government to ban Chinese lanterns (this was supported by the three Welsh fire and rescue services) and also helium filled balloons, I'm not sure if that motion was passed but I do know that there is a ban on releasing them from grounds under the control of all county councils in Wales.

It's cow-chokers like you that'll be the death of shooting...:p
