Smart meters.

That's exactly what it is.Can a "dumb" meter not be fitted by a qualified electrician?
They have to meet Goverment( loose term) targets by 2030 Net Zero Bollix otherwise energy companies will be fined.
Remember it's SMART for them not for you.
That's the route I'll be looking to take when I get the "offer" of a recording device for my home.
I believe upto and including the meter belongs to the energy company and can't be tampered with or moved, after the meter you can do what you like as long as its by a qualified person

Reviving an old thread rather than starting a new one !

Got 2 properties with Eon and have been contacted today on both to say that both meters ( 2 separate accounts ) are now at the end of their life and need to he replaced and they will arrange a technician.... sounds like a back door smart meter install !
E-on have been writing to me, emailing me, and texting me for months - possibly years - telling me I need a smart meter and that my meter has come tk the end of its life.

I've just been ignoring them, to be honest. I'm not even that opposed to smart meters, I just can't be arsed 😂

Almost certainly, the meters are not at the end of their life. If you ask them for evidence that the meters aren't working properly, they won't have any.

Yes, I had the same line of bull poo from both Shell Energy and Octopus. A brief but pointed email explaining that they could not know how old my meter is and I have heard no more about it. Suggesting that as a company they are trying to bully customers into compliance works.

I wouldn't mind this if smart meters were actually smart, but they're not. It is a fraudulent description. A smart meter would offer benefits to the consumer, most obviously by making retail suppers redundant and having the option of buying electricity directly off the wholesale market at the best spot prices.

I pointed out to a very stroppy line manager with E-on who's staff member insisted Dad come to the phone (could hardly see or hear) to answer questions from the person who had a strong Asian accent. Sister was visiting and took over... she went up 1 more manager in 20mins and Dad was credited £200.00 as an apology.
