Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22

Hi guys

I am looking into the possibility of purchasing a S&W M&P 15-22 (.22 Rimfire) for some fun shooting and also possibly to use it for for a bit of Rabbit shooting.

As these rifles are not exactly cheap in the UK at about £650, ($840). For anybody with experience of either, do you think that the performance centre version at about £850 ($1100) is worth the extra outlay?

many thanks.

Ps - I already have an Anshutz 1417 so I already have a good bunny rifle.

I've got a MOE one with the magpul furniture and it shoots extremely well, I have heard that the performance centre model has a tight chamber so that it becomes a bit more finnicky with feeding different ammo.
to be honest its not really an out and out target type rifle to get too worried about ultimate accuracy, its too much fun for that!! Id save the £200.

Given the current climate, I'd not want to be hunting the fields with one, nor hanging out the window of a car to shoot rabbits with it.

Back about 1995 I was offering the loan of a 22lr in the guise of an AR15 to go and shoot rabbits in rural NI. Thought it was a pretty stupid idea even then...

Get a Sig 522 SWAT instead, having owned one and also having had plenty of experience with the MP 15-22, the Sig is far better and more reliable, there are plenty of comparison vids on youtube.

Ian.

I had one, I regret selling it.

i sold it because it was frankly very inaccurate. Even off a bench rest a 3" group at 50m was all that was about achievable. At the time I wanted a good rabbit gun so it was sold.

Ill but another, probably a performance centre as the performance is fractionally better.

if you want a good rabbit gun my money would be on a lithgow arms at the moment. I've seen consistent sub moa groups shot at 100m

Like most rimfires it likes some ammo more than others.
mine is great with ely sport but not with cci for example. I have a different rifle for rabbits though as they can draw unwelcome attention with its looks when out and about, there are a few farmers who are not happy with people wandering around with military looking rifles.

I shot several of these tactical practice .22s before buying an M&P 15-22. The armorer at S&W said the chamber is tight, and they like inexpensive Federal Classic as well as anything, as those are sized like the match ammo. Mine does well with the Federal. It is a light rifle, being so much plastic, but feels very much like my Colt 6502 carbine.

I added weight to mine, in the fake buffer tube, pistol grip etc to bring the weight up to a more realistic level for a typical AR and it handles a bit better to me.

Ive had 1 for about 5 years now (the standard version) fantastic wee gun super reliable and works with all ammo including sub sonic. I honestly don't think the magpull or performance centre models are worth the extra money. loads of after market parts available on line and on ebay for humble money. the trigger is a bit heavy but not unusable and plenty of trigger upgrades available. buy it, shoot it and have fun that's what they are all about!
