Smooth Hair Vizsla

Have a smooth and a wire for stalking, and whilst the smooth has been excellent in many ways, she has never liked sitting still in anything but good weather. This is despite having a longer/thicker coat than a standard smooth (from her goose hunting heritage on the Solway, where her parents used to jump out and swim to retrieve). The wire’s coat seems to turn most weather and dry faster, but a least he’ll suffer in silence. In the end I got her a neoprene coat, which she hated but kept her warm - she’s retired from bad weather stalking now.
Depends very much upon the dog. I'm on my 5th smooth Vizsla, she is our 2nd rescue dog, first bitch and the first with a full tail. All have worked incredibly well (No2 won the HVS Plate as a pup) and all have "shivered" as much through excitement on the shooting field as through the cold. I'm relatevely recent to regular deer stalking and only the fourth dog and current bitch have worked on deer. All I can say is I'd wished I'd trained them earlier! Despite coming to me as a rescue dog at 18 months old and never having worked before, my current bitch is incredible both on feathered game and deer. They will never be as good as some other deer breeds but all of my Vizslas have been family dogs and kept inside as a full member of the family. Candidly, in those moments of having no dog, the house and our lives have been incredibly empty. This video shows just how good my bitch is - crap videoing but stay with it to the end and you'll see just how good she was! If you want a dog to work deer daily, get a GWP, BMH or even a Teckel. If you want all of your family's lives to be enrichened, get a smooth (original flavour) Vizsla.

Had a smooth hair vizla and he hated the cold and wet. So went for a GWP and he loves the cold and wet, swims in icy water with no ill effects but suffers in the heat. Just depends on what you want or need.

Love those photos. I have a couple of old lurcher cross weimeraners and my wife wants a period of 6 months with no dogs...just to see what it is like. I'd have another in a flash. I've been considering a vizsla for some time actually. Beautiful looking dogs indeed.
Mine was the same but you should see her with the dog now - honestly, the dog gets more love that I do

U don't say it u expect ur gun dog to do?
Personally not a fan, seen very very few I would give kennel space too, quite possibly I've only seen poor 1s
Not saying all ( and a lot will be how u intro then to water) but quite a large majority do struggle to enter cold water. Enough that it's more than just had training
And struggle with cold weather, but many smooth coated breeds are guilty of that.
I've always said if u don't want a dog to point getting an hpr ur not utilising ur dogs strongest strengths and likely trying to improve and use the dogs weaker traits.
