I had an evening walk last night for an hour until dark and got onto a hind that honked and left the bush opening I could see her in. Bugger, missed the video but her calf skipped through and I got a snippet, better than sfa of course.
I went back to the same gully system this morning thinking that if I see the spikey I videoed yesterday within a reasonable retrieving distance from the nearest ute access I might take a poke at him.
Deer had been walking a spur above me at daylight for several days in a row according to doggy and this morning he stopped, alerted me and looked at me with another of those "wtf" expressions "cant you tell there are deer above us"? but a lot of thick schitt stops any thought of actually seeing something so I kept wandering along until doggy quickened his pace and went around a bushy knoll. I knew he was following deer above him by sound so following along scanning the schitt out of everything I eventually saw the dog flat on his guts ahead of me. Ah schitt! That means the deer is very close to him, where is it? Movement in the ferns allowed me the slightest glimpse of a hind that was in a hollow leading down to a creek, she was onto me and vanished.
Dog meanwhile remained statue still,he was looking ahead but to his right a little suggesting that there was another one and sure enough behind a tree big enough to cover the full length of his body was a stag that was looking back at the dog with head and a small portion of neck showing. The deer was approx 30-40 yards ahead of the dog.
I had my smaller tripod legs ready and spread and placed it on the ground and lowered the old 7mm onto it and the frigging video camera on top wobbled backwards pointing to the sky.."ah eff" so I settled it in one motion and wound the scope up from 3.5 to (i still haven't looked at the power ring ha ha) and as the young stag turned ready to follow the hind he got a 150 grainer in his scone.
It entered on an angle and came out under his left ear. He was still kicking when the camera rolled,...mmmm fat, just rubbed out...perfect!
Good job doggy..big fussy pat session! Mind you they only have pat sessions when the dogs have done something well, they soon recognise what is good and bad. Walked back to my ute and with some crash bash bumping and a long rope he was towed to a bank ,dropped off then the ute backed up and rolled onto the tailgate and we got the deer home where the time and effort to weigh him whole, less an egg cup of blood was made. It isn't very often when they can be retrieved in the full.
Right on the money @ 300lbs on the dot and on the gralloch his kidneys encased in white fat with a head shot suggests that he will be a ripper freezer model.
Another good morn in the bush with my dog.
